Wayne Rooney's glorious playing career came to an end today (Friday), when the legendary striker decided to hang up his shoes and serve fully as Derby County's coach.

Rooney, who served as interim coach following the dismissal of Philip Coco from November, has signed for two and a half years at the club and will continue to be accompanied by a team that will include, among others, Shay Gibben and Steve McLaren.

"Ever since I returned to the UK I have been thrilled by the potential of Derby," he said.

"The stadium, the training ground, the quality of the staff and the young players who grow up here, and of course - the fans. Despite further suggestions, I knew immediately that Derby County was the right place for me. It is a great honor and I promise all involved that I will do everything to maximize the potential I have seen in the last 12 months at this historic club. "

Rooney, who starred with 253 goals and five championships in his 559 appearances for Manchester United, returned to Mechela in 2017 and returned to his youth team, Everton.

He joined the Derby as a player last year, scoring seven goals in 35 appearances.

"Usually you retire at the end of a season and then as a player you have time to think about it, but for me it happened in the middle of the season," he said.

"The last few months have helped me make a decision and I feel my future is in coaching. I had a great career and enjoyed every minute, there were ups and downs but I would not change anything. I hope to write a new history with a successful coaching career."

The legendary former striker, who made 120 appearances for the England national team (an all-time record for a field player), impressed as a temporary coach.

When he took office the derby had only one league win out of 13 games, and now the ship has stabilized slightly.

Still, his team is ranked 22nd out of 24 in the minor leagues with 19 points, as is Sheffield Wednesday above the red line.
