Ingrid Schuhbauer from Freising continues to face the challenges of the Corona period in the Bavarian Handball Association.

It's mainly about the youth.

Freising

- The new presidium was recently elected at the Association Day of the Bavarian Handball Association (BHV).

Because of the corona pandemic, there was no face-to-face event this time, everything was done online.

The 56 delegates had previously submitted their votes by registered mail - and in the end Ingrid Schuhbauer was happy to be re-elected.

The 72-year-old Freisinger will remain Vice President of Gaming for the next three years.

In the FT interview, she talks about her career and other major challenges.

Ms. Schuhbauer, congratulations on your re-election.

Are you satisfied with your result?

I got 38 of the 56 votes.

It was of course clear that it was not unanimous.

I'm always in focus and also had to support unpopular decisions - so I'm already satisfied.

In general, there was a generation change in the Presidium - I want to support the young people with my experience.

You have been Vice President of the BHV since 2011.

What is your career like as a sports official?

I started out as a treasurer at SC Freising.

I soon took over the post of game director for the youth in the Munich district.

After the districts were abolished in the course of the reform, I took over this office for the district of Altbayern.

Finally, I was elected as the district chairman for gaming technology and was also an association woman manager.

In this role, I worked very well with Peter Kastenmeier, my predecessor as Vice President Gaming Operations - we were a good team.

In the end I was asked if I would like to take over his position.

Were you immediately convinced that you would be part of the Presidium of the Bavarian Handball Association?

No, the post seemed too high to me at the time.

But they asked my husband Walter if he would agree that I do that.

That was him and then he said to me: “You can do it easily.” After a period of reflection, I accepted and was elected for the first time in 2011.

What are your areas of responsibility?

I am responsible for all games in the association, for example in the Bavarian and regional leagues.

I also head a number of related committees - and that's where it is particularly important to me to always provide fresh impetus.

We have to pay attention to which currents to react to.

I also head the Association's Youth Games Committee, because the youngsters are of course the most important thing.

Actually, I am active on all levels - you can almost call me the voluntary office of the BHV.

My phone rings a lot when problems arise, but I am happy to help with my experience.

Not to be forgotten is the referee area, which is also part of our team.

The aim here is to find young people and to train and educate them.

The effort cannot be quantified in hours, it is already very extensive.

You have been Vice President for ten years and have now been elected for a further three years.

How much longer do you want to go on?

You have to leave the church in the village.

I'm older and actually have other things to do.

There has now been a generation change in the Presidium - there are many good young people new.

I want to give them a helping hand, and I'm already building my successor.

I really enjoy working with the boys: They benefit from my experience - and I always learn something new.

It's a give and take in volunteering.

Unfortunately, the corona pandemic also has to be mentioned at the moment, games are on hold.

For you, that means even more work.

That's true.

We in the Presidium are constantly working on new scenarios.

It is particularly important to me that we provide impetus for young people and that they do not leave handball.

With the adults, I'm sure they'll come back again.

It looks different with the offspring.

Unfortunately, the planning for the qualifying tournaments is currently stalling - the clubs first have to know how many young players they still have.

Overall, it's about the future of our sport - and we really have a lot to do there.
