Puck hunting on your own meadow

As soon as homework is done and homeschooling is over, school supplies fly into the corner at Ruwwe in Oberding.

As soon as homework is done and homeschooling is over, school supplies fly into the corner at Ruwwe in Oberding.

Oberding - The brothers Patrick (7) and Lorenz (9) put on their ice hockey equipment for the Young Gladiators of TSV Erding, tie their skates, grab a stick and a puck and off you go on the ice - in their own garden.

The Ruwwe family lives in the middle of the airport community and has conjured up their own ice rink on the lawn in front of the terrace.

“We really wanted to do something for our children,” says mother Julia Ruwwe, explaining the background.

“Real sport has not been possible since November, neither in school nor in a club.

The boys are bored and somehow they have to drain their energy.

And because we are an ice hockey family, we thought of an alternative. "

That is why father Alexander Ruwwe, a technical engineer, became creative and a sports facility builder.

Even before the hard lockdown in December, there was shopping and crafting.

The family bought PVC pipes at the hardware store, which form the limit.

A six by nine meter rectangle was laid out in the garden.

The floor was somewhat leveled by means of plates, then a foil was placed on top and finally the water.

Shortly before Christmas the construction was ready, then the boys, both passionate ice-chippers, waited longingly for the three to four centimeters high water layer to freeze.

“During the Christmas holidays, the boys asked every day whether they could finally go on it,” says mom with a laugh.

“It was difficult to be patient.” But it was not until the end of the holiday before the temperatures continued to drop below freezing point and the ice area and safety net behind the gate were cleared.

But the wait was worth it, says Lorenz happily: “It was great when we were finally allowed to drive.” Since then, the nine-year-old and his brother have been on the ice for several hours every day.

They turn their circles, train forwards and backwards, shoot at goal or practice duels.

"It's a lot of fun", says Patrick, U9 player with the Young Gladiators and soccer player with TuS Oberding.

“It's almost like real ice training in the stadium.” And who distributes the penalty times if there is an argument here?

"Then mom is the referee", knows Lorenz, who lives in the Erdinger U 11, but also plays tennis.

In the late afternoon, when it gets dark, the floodlights in the garden come on.

Alexander Ruwwe has set up a spotlight so that his boys can play outside longer.

But also to carry out his job as an “ice cream master” with his wife after the game.

The hobbyist created the “Ruwwe-Zamboni” especially for this purpose - with a sledge, small water tank, hose and a towel on the back.

So he pulls the machine, nicknamed "Sledboni", across the ice in order to fill skid tracks and holes again and to ensure a flat surface.

The fun has been going on for eleven days, but the announced thaw could now spoil the game.

"We are considering whether we can use a tarpaulin to protect the area from the heat," says Alexander.

As long as it freezes at night, the family wants to keep the unusual area alive.

So that there is a worthwhile goal for Lorenz and Patrick after their homework.
