AC Milan last won the Scudetto, the Italian Serie A title, ten years ago.
After Juventus had become champions nine times in a row since then, the AC's chances of winning the title look a little better this time.
But against Atalanta Milan suffered a 0: 3 (0: 1) home defeat on the last matchday of the first half of the season.
Cristian Romero after a cross from German international Robin Gosens (26th), Josip Ilicic with a penalty kick (53rd) and Duvan Zapata (77th) scored the goals in a game that could have been even more in Atalanta's favor.
The first in the table with Zlatan Ibrahimović was particularly offensive without ideas;
Milan newcomer and ex-Bayern player Mario Mandžukić came on in the 70th minute of the game.
City rivals Inter, who were convincing 2-0 winners against Juventus a week ago, could have overtaken them with a win, but couldn't get past a 0-0 win at Udinese Calcio.
Atalanta, unbeaten in eleven games, improved to fourth place.
Only a few days after the surprising cup exit, AS Roma managed a 4: 3 (1: 1) win against Spezia Calcio.
The decision was made in stoppage time, shortly before the guests had equalized.
Loan from Real Madrid, Borja Mayoral scored two goals for Rome, but Spezia Calcio kept finding opportunities.
In the 90th minute - when the score was 3-2 - the newly promoted benefited from Rome defender Chris Smalling missing the ball.
Former Roma professional Daniele Verde scored 3: 3.
The guests seemed too safe afterwards, and that took their revenge: Lorenzo Pellegrini secured the Roma third place in the table with his late winning goal.
