Perhaps that is precisely why the proposal by the Bavarian Ice Sports Association (BEV) to set up a virtual club tournament met with great popularity: In a survey in December, around 30 percent of Bavarian clubs expressed interest in the format.

They were invited to a video conference with the BEV on February 10th.
There, with the help of the experts from the eSports department of the Ismaning University of Applied Management, any open questions could be discussed and cleared up before the final planning begins, says Frank Butz.
The ice hockey eSports tournament will take place in April
The survey among the clubs already made it clear that the new "NHL 21" is being played on the PlayStation.
On April 17th, a specific date for the virtual ice hockey event was also considered by the BEV chairman.
“From a purely organizational point of view, we can't do it at the end of February or beginning of March.
The whole thing should get a little in advance so that the story has a hand and foot.
That is why we will hold this tournament in April - and then choose the Bavarian eSports champion. "
The plan is to play this competition completely in one day, Butz looks ahead: “Firstly, we can generate the most attention, and secondly, a game like this only takes a few minutes.
In addition, the games could also run in parallel. ”Which mode and in which team size is ultimately played still depends on the actually binding reports after the video conference.
"Because interest in almost 30 clubs does not immediately mean that we will certainly play," says the ice hockey chairman.
The games should be able to be followed as a live stream via Twitch
The association has now also found a team of experts to provide support.
They have agreed to manage the event together with the association and to contribute the necessary know-how in terms of eSports and technology.
This is intended to create professional framework conditions for the online tournament format, so that, for example, all games can also be followed as a live stream via Twitch.
Frank Butz is confident: "If it works the way we imagine, then we have something great."
When it comes to putting together the teams, the association will not give any great guidelines, says the 56-year-old official.
It is not necessary for the first team coach or player to be at the controller, explains Butz.
Rather, everyone from the club environment is called upon to bring their skills to the console - regardless of whether they are ice cream masters, youth players, supervisors, stadium stewards or fan club members.
