FC Bayern Munich took advantage of the surprising defeat of RB Leipzig and extended its lead in the Bundesliga.

Bayern won 4-0 (1-0) at FC Schalke 04, Thomas Müller scored two goals (33rd minute / 88th) Robert Lewandowski (54th) and David Alaba (90th) one each.

Joshua Kimmich prepared three goals.

As a result of the win, Bayern, as leaders of the table, have seven points ahead of their pursuers Leipzig after 18 matchdays.

RB surprisingly lost 3-2 to relegation candidate Mainz 05 on Saturday.

Schalke remains bottom of the table with only seven points, but at least sold better than in the 8-0 defeat in the first leg last September.

The first shot on goal of the game belonged to Schalkes Timo Becker (1st).

After that, Munich tried to control the game and had the first big chance with Robert Lewandowski's header (7th).

But Schalke - without the ailing returnees Sead Kolasinac and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar - initially played unexpectedly well and could even have taken the lead: After a nice combination, Bastian Oczipka crossed the center, Mark Uth came to the header and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was able to close just defend with the knee (11.).

Two high balls, two goals

Bayern repeatedly pushed Schalke on the defensive, but because the outside players Benito Raman and Amine Harit also helped, the bottom of the table initially remained stable.

Lewandowski had the chance to lead Bayern with a free kick, but goalkeeper Fährmann parried both the standard and Serge Gnabry's margin (23).

After that, Bayern tried more often with crosses, but Schalke did not learn from it.

Kimmich hit the ball from the half-field in the direction of the left post and Thomas Müller hit his head for the lead (33.).

With 66 percent possession and 14 shots, Bayern had more play at break, but only led with one goal.

That changed shortly after the restart: Kimmich played a flying ball into the top, Lewandowski prevailed against Ozan Kabak and scored from a tight angle to 2-0 (54th).

With the lead in the back, Bayern continued to play in a controlled manner, but the final consequence was missing in the penalty area.

Many changes also interrupted the flow of the game.

After a corner, Goretzka could have scored the third Bayern goal, but Fährmann shot the ball into his arms from a few meters (82nd).

Schalke still had opportunities, especially with long-range shots, but there was no great opportunity to catch up.

In the final phase, Thomas Müller scored the 3-0 header after a corner from Kimmich (88th).

David Alaba scored the 4-0 (90th) with a long-range shot, Fährmann did not look good when the goal was conceded.
