Watch the 2: 2 summary between Maccabi Haifa and Maccabi Tel Aviv in the first game of the season (Sport 1)

The first phone call made by Luis Hernandez after he decided that the offer from Maccabi Tel Aviv fascinated him was to Jose Rodriguez.

The Maccabi Haifa contact was not surprised.

Like both, there are already quite a few alumni of the Real Madrid youth department who did not find themselves in the luxury club and rolled up to the league in Israel.

Rodriguez was already a Maccabi Haifa player at the time and for his acquaintance with Maccabi Tel Aviv from the time he was in Kiryat Shalom, Hernandez knew well.

To strengthen the recommendation he received from his Spanish friend, the Maccabi Tel Aviv stopper made another phone call, this time to Juan Pablo Colinas.

The goalkeeper who won the treble with Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2015, but did not get to play in the Champions League, warmly recommended and Hernandez closed the corner.

At the age of 31, after one departure outside of Spain - the English Lester City - he decided to fly to another country again.

The main goal is to finally win the championship.

Hernandez landed in Israel at a very late stage.

Only on October 5th.

Did not make preparation with the team, did not play in the Champions League qualifiers.

And if that wasn’t enough, from the first moment the comparison to Jair Amador hovered.

As cheeky as it may sound, Hernandez's arrival was the default.

Not because brakes come here with a better resume, but because Maccabi Tel Aviv has been looking for a foreign brake with a natural left foot all summer.

There was some flirtation with Hatem 'Abd al-Hamid who himself is not left-wing, but by and large the direction was a free foreign brake with a dominant left.

Hernandez landed in the pressure that was on Maccabi Tel Aviv in the days of Georgius Donis.

The league games, which were an afternoon walk in the park with Vladan Ivic, crushed Maccabi Tel Aviv and exposed the defense to terrible goals.

Daniel Tennenbaum, who did not send his jersey to the Serbian coach for washing, suffered easy goals from MS.

Ashdod, Hapoel Haifa and Maccabi Netanya.

Hernandez was one of the addresses for criticism.

With a net salary of 400,000 euros per season, a record in Malaga, Sporting Chihun and Leicester, you expect someone to arrange the defense, but apparently even the comparison to Carlos Garcia and the expectation that Maccabi Tel Aviv landed a leader at the back, was out of place.

The move to Patrick Van Leven a month ago did well for Maccabi Tel Aviv's defensive game.

Kwon Freiter's shrinking goal last Saturday in the victory over Maccabi Netanya, was the first that Maccabi Tel Aviv absorbed after five games in which it kept a clean sheet (the first of them was also Donis' last game).

But even in these games, when Maccabi Tel Aviv knew how to return to its base and lock the goal, it was not felt that Hernandez stood out in an unusual way.

He did his part and that too is an improvement, but maybe there were still buds of what Maccabi Tel Aviv wants to get from him.

He preferred Hernandez to be in the open.

His quiet playing on the lawn matches his character.

Aside from joyous celebrations that come out wholeheartedly after goals the team scores, Hernandez is the ultimate solid type.

Just as he is quiet and comfortable on the grass, he is also introverted in life off the field.

On all the trips to the games in Europe, he was collected on his affairs and did not seek to stand out.

His English is good, probably in relation to Jair Amador and Enrique Saborit who did not know a word when they landed here two and a half years ago, but even this advantage did not make Hernandez quickly assimilate into the gang.

With Donis he did not take advantage of his foreign spending weapon.

The Greek preferred that he be in the open and not mess with balls that needed to be put in.

Van Leven is actually asking him for the long foreign expenses, perhaps because the Dutch style of play is based on the wings and the balls of Hernandez from the outside line, are supposed to give Maccabi Tel Aviv the same element.

Will be a key part against Maccabi Haifa.

Tonight against Maccabi Haifa (Wednesday, 20:45, Sport 5), if there is no surprise in which Hernandez will not open, the last thing the Spaniard will have to focus on is away balls.

The two goals conceded by Maccabi Tel Aviv in Haifa in the first round, revealed exactly the weakness of Hernandez.

He did not brake fast.

Not someone who can cover up mistakes in midfield.

Maccabi Haifa beat Maccabi Tel Aviv with its most painful weapon, the fast transition games with Charon Sheri and Nikita Rokavica.

Hernandez is good at an orderly and responsible defensive game.

His excellence is when he does not have to chase fast attacking players from him in relatively open areas.

The eight-point gap in favor of Maccabi Haifa will oblige Maccabi Tel Aviv tonight not to lose.

A draw is not ideal either, but it will at least keep the fight for the championship alive.

Luis Hernandez will play a key role in the game.

Most of all, he wants to finish the one game after which they will stop putting a question mark over him and especially they will stop talking about him and remember other Spanish brakemen who left their mark on Maccabi Tel Aviv.
