The Superligue, the dream of PSG

2021-01-28T06:31:55.131Z

A closed competition project, reserved for the most powerful clubs, is being set up in Europe. Paris would be one of the founding members.

PSG dreams of it and the project grows thicker every day.

Launched at the end of the 1990s, the idea of a Superleague resurfaced as the pandemic hit all the clubs but the big ones in dizzying proportions.

A project that only concerns the greatest

For a month, leaks in institutional media, such as La Repubblica in Italy or the American agency AP, detail this company, which no one denies.

The Superleague would bring together 15 founding clubs: Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid, Juventus, Inter, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Dortmund and PSG.

There would be five guest clubs each season.

This championship at 20 would end with the playoffs.

The first six would each receive 350 million euros, a gigantic sum when the winner of the Champions League can currently hope for 80 million euros.

The club of fifteen would have found 4 billion euros to share, without anyone knowing where the money comes from.

UEFA collects for three competitions (Champions League, Europa League and Super Cup) 3.25 billion.

Several billion euros at stake

The ambition is to overcome sporting merit and ensure a comfortable level of revenue.

The health crisis could cut from 6.5 to 8.5 billion euros the income of European clubs, detailed on Wednesday Andrea Agnelli, president of Juventus Turin and the European Union of Clubs (ECA).

But until now, the intention has always been to put pressure on UEFA by waving this Superleague threat in order to increase the financial pie to be shared.

Renegotiation for post-2024 rights is underway.

This is the central question: can UEFA still satisfy the appetite of these mastodons?

FIFA and UEFA under pressure

On January 21, Fifa and the six football confederations including UEFA, issued a joint statement, which is very rare, to reject the idea and threaten in turn.

This closed championship "would not be recognized either by Fifa or by the confederations concerned" and "any club or player involved in such a competition would therefore be prohibited from participating in any competition organized by Fifa or the confederations".

In short: if Kylian Mbappé participated in the Superligue, he could no longer be selected by Didier Deschamps for the France team.

Fifa has not clarified a point: is a participant in the Superleague also excluded from his domestic championship?

But European law is less clear than the authorities want.

On December 16, 2020, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled in favor of two skaters who challenged their exclusion from International Skating Union (ISU) competitions for having participated in an alternative competition in 2014 and since abandoned .

The double game of Paris

The capital club does not speak on the subject.

Normal: Nasser Al-Khelaïfi is a member of the League's board of directors (LFP) and a member of the UEFA executive committee.

Impossible for him to comment publicly on a seditious project.

But Paris has never denied its presence among the fifteen rich rebels because it suits it.

It consolidates its status as a powerful admitted into the circle of clubs that matter, weigh and make opinion.

At PSG, many consider Ligue 1 not competitive enough, within a football (Federation and LFP) that he considers poorly organized and poorly managed.

Leaving the championship France - if that was Fifa's goal and its power - would not necessarily be viewed with a negative light in Paris.
