The Deloitte Sports Business Group published its annual "Money League".

There are four German clubs in the top 20.

There were great concerns in the football world that the

corona pandemic

could completely collapse the system.

According to the

Deloitte Sports Group

,

the 20 clubs with the highest turnover

generated

8.2 billion euros

in the 2019/20 season

.

In the previous year, the so-called

“Money League”

had earned 9.3 billion euros.

Transfer expenses and revenues are not included in the prestigious ranking.

And so the

cumulative drop in sales

of

over one billion euros is

primarily due to the almost complete

lack of matchday

revenues

(-257 million euros) and the

low income from media rights

(-937 million euros).

20th place: Eintracht Frankfurt (newcomer)

As befits a banking metropolis, Frankfurt is now sending its largest football club between the clubs with the highest turnover in the world.

The losses compared to the previous year are limited at the SGE.

Hello, "Money League".

174 million euros

in the 2019/20 season,

Eintracht

ensures that four German clubs are represented for the first time in the 24-year “Money League” history.

From a sporting point of view, a league over Eintracht Frankfurt,

SSC Napoli is

one place ahead of Hessen in the “Money League”.

The southern Italians move to 19th place.

However, Naples will not be happy to think back to 2020.

The death of club icon

Diego Maradona

hit the football-loving city to the core.

The Argentine had led the

Gli Azzuri

to the last championship in club history.

The 2019/20 season was

a bit strange

for

Olympique Lyon

.

In the

Champions League

, the French caused a big surprise with their semi-finals.

It went just as far in the

Coupe de France

cup competition

.

In the League Cup

Coupe de la Ligue

, Lyon even made it to the final.

In the league, however, it was only enough for

seventh place

.

The Olympique women meanwhile bagged their

fifth Champions League title in a row

.

The French made over 40 million euros less than in the previous year in the 2019/2020 season.

The

failed royal class qualification

will probably make itself felt again next year.

Nevertheless, it only went down one place in the ranking.

17th place: Everton FC (previous year: 19th)

The

first English club in the ranking

has surprisingly put away the broken TV contract with China and even made up two places.

The

FC Everton

landed in 17th place and may look up.

Despite the difficulties in the

corona pandemic

and the lack of payments from China, the

Toffees were

even able to

increase

their sales by

1.5 million euros

compared to the 2018/19 season

.

This makes them one of only three clubs in the ranking that actually posted a turnover plus.

16th place: FC Schalke 04 (previous year: 15th)

+

For

Schalke 04

, 2020 was just rock solid.

The clammy Revierklub was

facing the financial abyss

during the

Corona crisis

.

The impending bankruptcy in view followed one disaster after another.

Also sporty.

After all, at the beginning of 2021 the miners were able to

prevent

Tasmania Berlin's historic winless series

(31 Bundesliga games in a row without a win)

from being outbid

at the last second.

Sales fell

by over

100 million euros

compared to the previous year.

And with empty pockets,

S04

stumbles

towards

the descent.

Fans and those responsible fear the worst-case scenario.

A team with the same sponsor shows that things can go completely in the other direction.

Zenit St. Petersburg

lands as a

newcomer

in 15th place in the

"Money League"

.

+

Zenit was able to increase its sales

by over

56 million euros

compared to the previous year.

How did the club do it?

If you take a closer look, the financial soaring is not a huge surprise.

In 2019/20 St. Petersburg took part in the

Champions League

for

the first time in four years

.

In addition, the Russians found different conditions than other European clubs in the corona pandemic.

In Russia it was possible to play in

front of fans

again in June

.

14th place: Inter Milan (previous year: 14th)

It wasn't that long ago that

Inter Milan

belonged to the top floor of European football.

After years of failure, the team is getting ready to finally move forward in better times.

At least sporty ...

... because financially it looks

anything but rosy

for

Inter

in Corona times.

The club, which belongs to the Chinese retail giant Suning Commerce, has suffered a drop in sales of over

70 million euros

.

Since 2015, the club has had the highest average attendance in Serie A, this income is now missing.

Atletico Madrid's

sporting success

is closely linked to the name

Diego Simeone

.

The Argentine has been coaching the Spanish top club since 2011 and has had a long list of successes during this period: Spanish champions and cup winners, two-time Europa League winners, and Atletico twice in the Champions League final.

Not bad, Señor

Simeone

.

Financially, the capital

city

suffered

a

minus

of almost

36 million euros

.

Atletico has been playing its home games in their new gem, the

Wanda Metropolitano,

since 2017

.

Since then, it has been possible to increase earnings on a matchday by

50 percent

.

Precondition of course: fans are allowed.

Most of them were missing in 2020 due to Corona.

12th place: Borussia Dortmund (previous year: 12th)

+

Borussia Dortmund

only narrowly failed to make it into the top ten.

Like last year,

BVB took

a respectable 12th place in the

“Money League”

.

The anger about missing the top ten should be

limited

in

Dortmund

.

Despite Corona, the club has a

decline in sales

of only

six million euros

.

Quite a lot of money, but almost peanuts compared to other European heavyweights.

As a European spectator, ghost games hit

BVB

particularly hard.

Up to

three million euros

should go by the

Dortmunders

on a normal game day.

All the more impressive are the black and yellow sales results.

11th place: Arsenal FC (previous year: 11th)

+

At

Arsenal

it does not run straight round - neither sporty nor financially.

The

Gunners

landed in the 2019/2020 league far away from the European competitions on an unsatisfactory eighth place.

Worse still:

Arsenal FC are losing

revenue.

They claim

eleventh place

in the

“money table”

, but a

decline in sales

of

57 million euros

is not so easy to put up with.

Hard times for all fans of the

Gunners

.

Juventus Turin

was the

first team to make it

into the top ten of the

“money table”

.

Tenth place, just like last year.

But the Italian record champions also have to

accept

a heavy

drop

in

sales

.

A minus of

62 million euros

compared to the 2018/2019 season.

That's a lot of wood even for the association supported by the car manufacturer Fiat.

At least it was sporty last season.

Although the

Champions League ended

once more in the round of 16, at least in the league the

ninth championship title

in a row could be won.

Yes, you read that right: the

ninth title

in a row.

There should be another complaint about the Bundesliga.

9th place: Tottenham Hotspur (previous year: 8th)

+

Tottenham Hotspur

has

one of the most colorful coaching personalities on the sidelines in

Jose Mourinho

.

And he even brought back success in the current season - the

Spurs

were at the top of the table for a few game days.

And how is it going financially?

+

As a

Tottenham

accountant

you will have had a few sleepless nights recently.

The 19/20 season ended with a

drop in sales

of over

75 million

.

The new

Tottenham Stadium is

particularly heavy in the stomach

.

The most expensive arena in Europe with

over a billion

construction costs (400 million euros were planned) is a real gem, but also extremely expensive.

8th place: Chelsea FC (previous year: 9th)

+

Money does

n't really matter

at

Chelsea

.

Before the current season, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner were signed for over

130 million euros

.

A lot of money when you consider that at the end of the 2019/2020 season the club had almost

43 million euros

less in its pocket

compared to

the previous season.

A turnover of 469.7 million euros

is still enough for eighth place in the

“money table”

.

In terms of sport, the

Londoners

only

move in the

midfield of the

Premier League

.

Therefore, Frank Lampard had to take his hat off in January 2021.

Successor as

Chelsea

coach was none other than

Thomas Tuchel.

This obligation should certainly not have been cheap ...

7th place: Paris Saint-Germain (previous year: 5th)

+

Paris Saint-Germain

is one of the biggest losers in the corona crisis.

While the top French team had a

turnover

of

635.9 million euros

in the 2018/19

season, it fell to

540 million euros

in the 2019/20 season

.

The

minus

of almost

96 million euros

is the third highest loss in the top 20 of the

"money table"

.

Accordingly,

PSG has dropped

from fifth to seventh

in the

“money table”

.

In addition to the lack of audience income, the

Parisians

also

lacked the

money from TV marketing.

Money does

n't really matter

at

Manchester City

.

The Sheikh of Abu Dhabi Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has been the main owner of the

Premier League club

since 2008

.

By all means, success should come to the English working-class city.

For this,

Pep Guardiola

was signed up years ago

.

Champion and cup titles were won in bulk, the really big hit - namely the

Champions League title

- has not yet succeeded.

Financially,

Manchester City closed

the 2019/20 season with a

loss

of over

61 million euros

compared to the previous year.

A nice chunk of money, but the sheik can obviously cope with it.

Before the current season,

180 million euros were spent

on player transfers

alone

.

The roster is valued at

1.06 billion euros

.

Any questions?

The

Liverpool

is in the

"Money League"

climbed to the top.

The

English champions

were in seventh place in the 2018/19 season, and with a turnover of almost

559 million euros

, the LFC is now in fifth place.

The

Liverpool

executives should certainly not like a

drop in sales

of

46 million euros

.

alone

make up a large part.

Manchester United

is certainly one of the losers in the corona crisis.

131 million euros

less than in the previous year is the second largest

loss

in

sales

in the top 20 of the

“Money League”

.

Overall, the 2019/20 season was not a good year financially: The

Red Devils'

debts

more than doubled

from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020 from just under

225 million

to around

525 million euros

.

The first half of the Premier League went

really well

for

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's

team

.

The team lurked second in the table at halftime.

One downer, however, was the Champions League group stage: United had to let Paris SG and RB Leipzig go first.

Welcome to the top three of the

"Money League"

.

The

Bayern

climbs in the

sales table

from fourth to third place.

Of course, the

Munich

-based company also

had to accept

sales

losses

in Corona times

.

At almost

26 million euros

, however, they are “moderate”.

With a

turnover

of

634.1 million euros

, only two teams are ahead of

Bayern

In terms of sport, the 2019/20 season couldn't have gone better.

Championship title

Check.

Cup win

Champions League title

?

Check.

Of course, the players let it rip afterwards *.

A big downer, despite the many successes: the victory celebrations took place without

fans.

Instead of a full Allianz Arena it was called ghost games.

As in the previous year,

Real Madrid

ranks

second in the

“Money League”

.

revenue of

714.9 million euros

No team has hit the corona crisis as badly as

FC Barcelona

.

Although the Catalans posted the highest

turnover

in the 2019/20 season

(almost 0.2 million more than their competitor Real), the

loss in turnover

amounts

to an incredible

125.7 million euros

.

In 2018/19

Barca

had a

turnover

of almost

841 million

.

It

would be too easy to find the

blame for the

steep drop in sales

only in the corona crisis.

In recent years,

FC Barcelona has

done poorly - expensive player transfers and high game salaries are mentioned here.

As reported by Spanish media, the association is said to have liabilities of

1.17 billion euros

!

It is already speculated that the great

FC Barcelona

might even have to

sell

superstar

Lionel Messi

dearly.
