Boris Herrmann has been on the road for 80 days since November, the first German to ever sail on the Vendée Globe.

It is the toughest of all regattas, alone around the globe through the most dangerous areas of the seas.

He had sailed south from Les Sables d'Olonne, around the Antarctic, past the southern tips of Africa, Australia and America and back to France.

On Wednesday, the 39-year-old from Hamburg was in third place - and had a good chance of winning.

He raced towards his goal at 18 knots.

But then he rammed a fishing ship 90 nautical miles from the finish line during the night.

In the end Boris Herrmann crossed the finish line in fifth place. Although he was credited with six hours due to his involvement in a rescue operation, the overall ranking remained fifth.

The victory went to the

Frenchman Yannick Bestaven with »Maître Coq IV

«.

SPIEGEL:

Mr. Herrmann, over 50,000 kilometers around the world, through the Arctic Ocean and huge waves.

And then you collide with a large fishing vessel just before your destination.

How could that happen?
