The German sailor Boris Herrmann has reached the destination of the Vendée Globe, the toughest solo regatta in the world, with his yacht "Seaexplorer".

As the fifth participant, he sailed across the finish line in front of the French town of Les Sables-d'Olonne, the organizer gives his time after deducting a time bonus of 80 days 14 hours 59 minutes and 45 seconds.

It is still unclear what place Herrmann will occupy in the overall ranking.

Although he is currently in fourth place because of a time credit, he could lose this to Jean Le Cam.

The Frenchman is still on the way and gets a bigger time credit at the finish (16:15 hours) than Herrmann (6 hours).

Both had received the bonus because they had helped rescue the shipwrecked participant Kevin Escoffier.

Until shortly before the end, Herrmann had a chance of winning in the Vendée, but collided with a fishing boat about 90 nautical miles from Les Sables-d'Olonne.

One wing broke and the headsail was stuck in a crane of the trawler.

Herrmann was uninjured and continued to sail at a slower speed.

Apparently no injuries

Herrmann told SPIEGEL that he had received no warning signal from his radar before the accident.

According to Herrmann, the fishing boat was a "huge trawler," and 15 people were standing on the bridge alone, yelling at him in Spanish.

His team then contacted the fishermen.

Apparently there were no injuries.

Herrmann lost so much time that he no longer had a chance on the podium.

The French Yannick Bestaven won the Vendée.

Although he finished third behind his compatriots Charlie Dalin and Louis Burton, he benefited from a time credit of over ten hours.

He had received this because he had also participated in the rescue operation for Escoffier.

Bestaven's winning time is 80 days, three hours, 44 minutes and 46 seconds.
