It feels like Sebastian Buchwieser has been the coach at EC Peiting for an eternity.

In a few weeks, however, they will part ways.

Peiting

- Usually the assemblies at the ice hockey clubs are free of training.

But a lot is different this season.

Due to the many English weeks, EC Peiting also trains regularly at the start of the week.

Yesterday's session not only brought sweaty exercises for the players, but also important information: After the training session, coach Sebastian Buchwieser announced that he would be leaving the top division after the end of the season.

“The decision had been made for a long time, although it is not against the ECP.

But I want to try something new and look for a new challenge, ”said Buchwieser, describing his motivation for breaking up his tent in Peiting.

The 41-year-old started his coaching position at ECP in the 2016/17 season, the current league season is his fifth with the Pfaffenwinkler.

This makes the Garmisch-Partenkirchen native the longest-serving coach in the Oberliga Süd.

We would have liked to continue with him, but we can understand the decision.

Gordon Borberg, team manager at EC Peiting

"We would have liked to continue with him, but we can understand the decision," said ECP team manager Gordon Borberg.

Peiting is Buchwieser's second coaching station so far, having previously looked after the then Bayern division and now the upper division Lindau for two years.

In Peiting he succeeded John Sicinski in summer 2016.

“It was and is nice work here.

There is a high level of trust between the club management and me, ”said Buchwieser, who lives with his family in Schongau.

Team manager Borberg praised the outgoing coach: "We are very grateful for the good work that Sebastian has done for us." Buchwieser's greatest success in Peiting was winning the championship of the Oberliga Süd in the 2018/19 season.

Not least because of this, he was also named “Oberliga Süd coach of the year”.

Ice hockey: EC Peiting is in no hurry to find a successor for Sebastian Buchwieser

The team manager does not see any great rush in terms of filling the coaching position.

"Our focus is now on the current season, although there will definitely be one or two conversations with potential candidates in the near future," reported Borberg.

It is still completely open where Buchwieser is going: “I'll let this come my way.

It should be an association where I can make a difference, ”is Buchwieser's profile for his next employer.

But the 41-year-old is still employed by the Peitingers, and there is still a lot of work waiting for him.

After two corona-related compulsory breaks, the ECP still has a number of catch-up games to play.

The next one follows on Tuesday with the home game against ECDC Memmingen (7.30 p.m.).

The Allgäu finished the main round of the Oberliga Süd as leaders last season.

The play-offs were then no longer played because the season was canceled due to the pandemic.

Due to the success in the 2019/20 season, the "Indians" were also traded high for the following season.

Ice hockey: Dennis Neal threatens to be out for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury

However, due to many injured players, they have not yet lived up to these expectations.

With just one win in the last six games, Memmingen slipped to tenth place in the table.

In the first encounter with Peiting, however, the Allgäu were 5-2 ahead in the home stadium.

In the hoped-for reparation, the Peitinger will have to do without Dennis Neal in addition to Ty Morris, who was already missing in the last two games against Höchstadt and Passau.

The 28-year-old defender sustained a shoulder injury in the home game against Passau on Sunday after an unfortunate collision with an opposing player.

It is to be feared that Neal will be out for the rest of the season.
