Four goals against in the first half, five in the second, three of them in the last few minutes: Southampton FC suffered a debacle in the 9-0 (0-4) against Manchester United.
The team of the former Bundesliga coach Ralph Hasenhüttl lost Alexandre Jankewitz in the second minute to a red card for gross foul play.
Jan Bednarek also saw red among the guests in the final phase.
For Hasenhüttl it is already the second defeat at this level with Southampton.
In the preseason, the coach and his team had to accept a 9-0 win against Leicester City.
Hasenhüttl has been training the club since December 2018.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka gave United the lead in the 18th minute when he completed a Luke Shaw cross at the back post.
Marcus Rashford followed suit in the 25th minute.
A Bednarek own goal on a Rashford cross made it 3-0 before Edinson Cavani scored the fourth goal in the 39th minute.
Substitute Anthony Martial scored the fifth goal from an acute angle and McTominay increased in the 71st to 6-0.
Bednarek's miserable evening ended after a dismissal, he had brought down Martial in the penalty area.
Bruno Fernandes converted the penalty before Martial scored his second goal in the last minute of regular time and Dan James scored the ninth goal in stoppage time.
Leader City (44 points), like champions Liverpool FC (40), will not play for their next game until Wednesday.
Manchester United are also at 44 points, but after the 9: 0 they still played the worse goal difference and two more games than City.
