1. FC Köln were eliminated in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup.
At 4: 3 (2: 2, 2: 2) after a penalty shoot-out at second division Jahn Regensburg, the Cologne team struggled for a long time with the referee - and with themselves. Alexander Meyer parried a penalty in regular time and one in the penalty shoot-out.
Cologne's Jannes Horn also missed.
New striker Emmanuel Dennis provided an early and comfortable lead.
When he wisely let a deep pass run through his legs and sent his teammate Ismail Jakobs in the direction of the opening goal (4th).
And then hit himself in the penalty area after a strong body deception (22nd).
Trouble about offside decision
Even the interim goal by Scott Kennedy (35th) did not seem to unsettle Cologne.
Five minutes later the ball was again in the Regensburg Gate;
Benno Schmitz had headed a cross from Jannes Horn into the far corner (40th).
However, after a lengthy review by the video assistant, the hit was withdrawn.
Horn stood in front of his flank in an offside shot attempt, which a Regensburg defender had cleared.
Because there was apparently a goal defense reaction, the contact of the Regensburger did not count - unlike on Tuesday in the cup game between Dortmund and Paderborn in a situation that was at least similar in terms of rules.
Appropriately, Cologne received the equalizer just a few minutes later.
Jann George had pushed past keeper Timo Horn after Andreas Albers had dropped his head (43.).
For the rainy evening that the Cologne team spent in Regensburg, it was also fitting that Dennis failed with a hand penalty against Regensburg keeper Meyer (78th).
In extra time, Cologne was decisive for the game, but nothing really came out of it.
In the penalty shootout, Max Besuschkow converted the decisive shot.
It is the first quarter-finals in Regensburg club history.
