Liverpool FC lost 1-0 (0-0) to Brighton & Hove Albion on the 22nd Premier League matchday.
Steven Alzate scored the only goal of the game in the 56th minute when he shot at teammate Leandro Trossard from close range and the ball flew into the goal.
For Liverpool, who were champions last season, it was the fourth defeat of the current season.
The team of coach Jürgen Klopp is now in fourth place in the table - and is seven points behind leaders Manchester City.
With the win, Brighton climbed two places to 15th place. The club had already achieved a respectable win in the first leg: last November they beat Liverpool 1-1.
Tottenham Hotspur had also lost to the team.
For Liverpool there are now two difficult and important games in the league: on Sunday the club will play against leaders Manchester City, the following weekend they will face the current third-placed Leicester City.
