Football: Alisson sinks Liverpool against Manchester City

2021-02-07T19:46:24.586Z

Voted best goalkeeper in the world in 2019, the Brazilian from Liverpool weighed down his team on Sunday afternoon against City (1-4).

The keeper curse hits Liverpool again.

This time, however, it touches one of the most reliable players in Jürgen Klopp's squad: Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Sunday, the goalkeeper played a big role in the home defeat of the Reds against the Citizens (1-4), leader of the English championship.

Among the four goals conceded during the meeting, two are the consequence of direct errors of Alisson.

Worse, these two errors occur only a few minutes apart.

In the 73rd minute, Alisson misjudged the receding pass from Fabinho that Foden recovers before crossing for Gündogan who only has to push into the empty goal.

Three minutes later, the goalkeeper misses his raise which ends up in the feet of Bernardo Silva.

The latter crosses for Sterling who ends with a header, again in the empty net.

A surreal performance for a keeper of this standing.

Dumplings that offer the title to City

This poor performance by Alisson could already cost the title to the Reds who hold it.

Indeed, Manchester City now has 50 points in the standings with one game less, or 10 points ahead of its opponent of the day.

And this is not the first time that a Liverpool goalkeeper has come through a crucial game.

In June 2018, Loris Karius had already made two fatal mistakes in the Champions League final against Real Madrid (defeat 1-3).

Last year, it was those of Adrian, replacing Alisson Becker, who caused the elimination in the round of 16 of the reigning European champions against a surprising team from Atlético Madrid (defeat 2- 3 in the return leg).

One of the best at his post

Awarded in 2019 with the first Lev Yachine trophy, awarded to the best goalkeeper of the year, Alisson had been one of the main architects of Liverpool's victorious journey in the Champions League that year.

His reflex stop in the group stage against Napoli kept the Reds in the competition, as did his performance against Barca in the legendary comeback in the semi-finals at Anfield (4-0 victory).

The following year, the Brazilian also made a name for himself to allow the Reds to win their first league title since 1990. However, Alisson's last season was also plagued by injuries.

Since then, the Seleçao goalkeeper has struggled to regain the level that had allowed him to be elected best goalkeeper of the Champions League, Premier League and Copa America in 2019.
