With a win, Liverpool would have reported back in the fight for the title. And initially the Reds were the better team too. But Raheem Sterling, Ilkay Gündogan and their own goalkeeper ensured the next home defeat.

Liverpool FC have lost at home for the third time in a row.

Jürgen Klopp's team lost 1: 4 (0: 0) against Manchester City.

Ilkay Gündogan scored twice for City (49th, 73rd minute of the game) after he missed a penalty in the first half (37th).

Raheem Sterling (76th) and Phil Foden (83rd) scored the other goals for the guests.

Mohamed Salah scored for Liverpool with a penalty kick (63.).

League leaders City are already ten points ahead of defending champions Liverpool, who have already played one more game.

Liverpool pressed early from the start after two home defeats in a row, while City let the opponent come, often only exerting pressure on the player in charge in their own half.

The hosts tried offensively at first with quick combinations, over a few stations they played forward.

Manchester, on the other hand, built calmly, waiting for gaps to arise.

Neither team found that at first.

That changed when the Reds shifted their attacks as the game progressed to the right side, where Manchester's left defender Oleksandr Zinchenko struggled to narrow Trent Alexander-Arnold's sphere of activity.

Sadio Mané had the first chance of the game after a cross from Alexander-Arnold.

The Senegalese headed the ball just over it from five meters.

Five minutes later Roberto Firmino came from 15 meters to the finish, Ederson parried strongly.

In the 36th minute, Fabinho Raheem Sterling put in, who threatened to assert himself against three opponents in the penalty area.

Gündogan stepped up, but shot over the gate (37th).

It was Manchester’s third penalty shot in the sixth attempt.

In the first leg Kevin de Bruyne missed a penalty against Liverpool.

Gündogan is rehabilitating

After the break it was again Sterling who gave the guests the first chance.

Again he dribbled into the penalty area, this time it was not the foul, but the ball to Phil Foden.

His shot from short distance ricocheted off Allison, Gündogan dusted off (49th).

It was his eighth goal in the past eleven games.

Curtis Jones initially missed the chance to equalize (58th).

A short time later there was also a penalty for Liverpool.

Ruben first made a stick fault, then he held Salah in the penalty area.

The Egyptian transformed for sure.

Both teams then continued to play for victory.

John Stone's goal was rightly not given due to an offside position (71.).

But then Allison made two playback errors in a row.

City missed the first chance, just seconds later Gündogan scored for the second time.

Less than three minutes after the deficit, Liverpool's goalkeeper again played the ball directly into the feet of an opponent.

Sterling was the beneficiary (76th).

It got even more bitter for Liverpool - Foden also scored (83rd).
