Harvesting the fruit: Maccabi Rishon Lezion's method for success in the middle of the season

"In such a difficult and damn year one has to maintain proportions."

As of the 2014/15 season, Maccabi Rishon Lezion stands on amazing success figures when it comes to reaching the peak positions of Israeli basketball.

In their last seven appearances in the National Cup, the Oranges have qualified for the semifinals three times, and in six seasons in the league they have reached the Final Four five times, the finals three times, and once also won the championship.

This list, impressive as it may be, does not surprise anyone who follows the industry closely, but is accompanied by an amazing statistic: In almost every season since, except for the 2016 championship season, the Oranges have been armed with guard in the second half of the season, making them a success story.

Dominic Gonseno in 2015, Cameron Long in 2017, Keith Langford who did not help her take off in 2018, Alex Hamilton in 2019 and Diangelo Harrison last year.

Almost all of these players, with the exception of Hamilton, came for a short period starting in March, and left at the end of the season.

Tonight (Thursday, 18:30, Sport 5) against Hapoel Jerusalem, Rishon Lezion reaches the middle of the cup again, at best.

Again she is looking for reinforcement in the guard position, as she has done so well in recent years.

This time, it seems that the task is very complex, perhaps too complex, since too many variables stand in its way.

Leader and captain, but "it's not the same."

Maccabi Rishon Lezion of the current season has undergone severe upheavals since losing in the summer of the championship final to Maccabi Tel Aviv.

It lost its top Israelis, gave up participating in the EuroCup for economic and health reasons, and eventually experienced too many ups and downs between games.

"We are worried," admits club chairman Yitzhak Perry. "The corona year has caused us, and many other groups, a very severe economic blow.

The budget has dropped by more than 25 percent, and it is very difficult to build a low-budget group.

We build on sponsors and the management members' dealings in taking responsibility for bringing in additional funds.

We are not an urban team, but a team that plays in the city of Rishon Lezion, and the municipality, which is aware of the importance of sports for the city and the youth in the city, respectfully supports the team.

The municipal support continues, because it is set in the municipality's budget and does not change throughout the year. "

Perry expands and tells about the difficulties the group is going through this season:" At least 40 large and medium-sized companies, which we have been in business with for years, gave us a negative answer. Or donate to us, and we will turn next year.

I work this year on the lowest budget since I returned to the club 11 years ago.

I brought the club from NIS 7-6 million to a budget of 12 million in the years of the championship and in Europe, and we went back. "

In Rishon Lezion, only two years ago they aspired to put a stake in the Israeli top and therefore also registered for the EuroCup. The hope was to approach a budget of NIS 15 million a season. But in reality the team has been without a main sponsor in recent years, and only this year the French construction company Zvi came into the picture and helped it, when around the club admit that without their support early in the season, "the situation was much worse."

"Money seduced them."

As mentioned, except for last season and the 2014/15 season, Rishon Lezion did not find itself a regular part of the top already in the focal stages of the season - including in the years when it reached the finals and even won the championship.

But it seems like a bad season like the current season has not had her for many years.

Oz Blazer and Adam Ariel left for Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Jerusalem, and from last season's senior staff, Daryl Monroe, Noam Dovrat and Nimrod Tishman remain.

The team relied on Sean Armand who came in with a lot of money, but he left after retiring from the EuroCup, and Trey Lewis who came in his place did not really meet expectations.

Golan Gut, who reached the senior Israeli standard, is recording a mediocre season, and the bright spot is Noam Avivi's breakthrough.

Perry: "Maccabi and Jerusalem had an easy time with the money they received from the Treasury. They received millions and I received NIS 400,000, so they came and took two players who were our Israeli anchor. It was money that enticed them both to go. The second problem was that all the good Israelis, almost all, left Gut, Bar Timor and Nimrod Levy. There were not 20 players to choose from. For several years now we have been giving a stage to Israelis growing up here, probably to a spokeswoman who has been playing for a third year, and to Avivi who carries an injury and has difficulty expressing himself in every game. The results we hoped for, and we will sit down with the coaches to find such and such solutions. "

One of the coaches who worked in Rishon Lezion in recent years said of the current staff: "There is no doubt that the problem is with Israelis. If you look at the previous staff, even before Blazer and Ariel, there were senior Israelis like Avi Ben Shimol, Idan Zalmanson, and before that Nitzan Hanochi and others "This group lacks an Israeli leader, and Monroe is a leader and they did the right thing by appointing him captain, but it is different. The Israelis of the group are either young or those who are not leaders in their character."

"We give the stage to Israelis. The results are not as we hoped."

As mentioned, Rishon Lezion has become an expert in signing players who have changed its season in recent years. Perry explains the method: "Maccabi Rishon, throughout the years I have run it since I returned, has stuck to a straight and dry budget. We did not take risks at the beginning of the season, and when you do not take risks, you can not bring in big players, especially when you do not have a huge budget. "When players are ejected from Europe or do not have a contract, then they can come and you can run upstairs with them. We knew halfway through making substitutions of players who were not good or did not fit the style of play, and bringing in other players who took us upstairs."

"The one who is expected to pay the price in the near future is Luis, and the team is looking for a suitable player to bring him in, when even Jeremy Fargo's name came up, but at this point his costs are too high:" If we take the right steps, we can return to the top. " .

And yet, even ahead of tonight's game against Jerusalem, something has changed at the club that is at the bottom of the Premier League table with five wins from 12 games. "In the August-September area I sat with the coaches, and we were in the corona with a lot of fears. We did not understand and there was no vaccine. I said this year goes the way of health first; all of us, players, coaches and management - finish the season healthy. The second preference is financial stability; everyone Make a living from it, and the club will maintain stability in its own way.

”Sporting achievements were defined only as the third priority. "It's not that we give up the desire to succeed, and the fact that we reached the Cup semi-finals, but in such a difficult and damn year, a year where I lost my best friend because of the corona, we have to maintain proportions, and finish it first in a situation where no one was hurt."
