Fernando Alonso was involved in a car accident a good six weeks before the start of the new Formula 1 season.
The 39-year-old was doing a training ride on his racing bike in Switzerland on Thursday when the incident occurred.
This was confirmed by his Alpine team, which started under the name Renault until last year.
Alonso was clear and approachable, it said in the message.
No information was given about the severity of the injuries, and further investigations are to follow on Friday morning.
According to the Italian "Gazzetta dello Sport", which first reported the accident, the incident occurred near Alonso's home, Lugano.
The Spaniard was admitted to hospital with suspected fractures, but the condition was not critical.
Alonso won the Formula 1 World Championship with Renault in 2005 and 2006.
Until 2018 he was also in action for Ferrari and McLaren, followed by the supposed end of his career in the premier class.
At the age of 39, Alonso is set to make his comeback for Alpine alongside team-mate Esteban Ocon.
The season starts on March 28th in Bahrain.
Should Alonso be seriously injured and be absent in six weeks, there is no replacement driver available.
Alpine had so far failed to name a replacement pilot.
