Two quick goals before half-time paved the way: RB Leipzig won 2-1 (2-0) against FC Augsburg at the start of the 21st matchday in the Bundesliga.
Dani Olmo with a penalty (38th minute) and five minutes later Christopher Nkunku gave RB a comfortable lead, which was narrowed again with the connection goal by Daniel Caliguri (77th minute).
But Leipzig held the lead and thus consolidated its second place in the Bundesliga (44 points).
Bayern Munich are leaders with 48 points.
Augsburg has to orientate itself further downwards after the sixth defeat in the last seven games (22 points), currently the team of coach Heiko Herrlich is five points ahead of the relegation place.
This lead could melt further over the weekend.
On the sidelines of the game, the departure of defense chief Dayot Upamecano became known.
The French central defender is moving to FC Bayern thanks to a release clause for 42.5 million euros, confirmed by Bayern's sports director Hasan Salihamidžić of the "Bild" newspaper.
The Leipzig sports director Markus Krösche evaded Dazn when asked during the half-time break against Augsburg.
Krösche only said that you no longer have any influence on a change due to the release clause.
Upamecano was only on the bench against the FCA.
In the previous 20 league games Upamecano had started 19 times, only on the seventh match day the Frenchman was not ready to play due to an injury.
Upamecano did not play against Augsburg from the start, "because we have a Champions League game next week, that has nothing to do with other things," said Krösche.
For Leipzig it was the dress rehearsal before the Champions League duel on Tuesday against Liverpool FC (9 p.m., live ticker SPIEGEL.de).
RB has home rights in the first leg of the last 16, but the game will be played in Budapest due to the entry restrictions for people from Great Britain.
Several other games in the coming round in the Champions League and Europa League have been moved to other venues due to corona restrictions.
