Why we do without the choice of athletes

Draw a current account in 2020? We think that's impossible. How about a double event next year?

Draw a current account in 2020?

We think that's impossible.

How about a double event next year?

Michael Rademacher from Wartenberg has lived in the USA for over 20 years.

A few years ago he also moved from Ohio to Florida and lives a full 30 minutes by car from the stadium of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who won the Superbowl on Monday night.

What a lucky guy?

Well, the 55-year-old is more of a fan of the Cincinnati Bengals.

And they are even further away from the Buccaneers in terms of sport and geography (Ohio) than Hamburger SV from FC Bayern.

You can't ask for more than benevolent indifference for a Superbowl victory - at least in normal times.

In Corona times, everything is completely different.

In the run-up, there were heated arguments for and against the presence of spectators, says Rademacher.

"As in almost all countries, there were two factions, one of which sees either the security of the individual as a mandate, depending on the political direction, or the other faction allows people the freedom to protect themselves." In a state run by the Democrats No spectators would have been admitted, suspects the Wartenberger, who incidentally, since the pandemic, has only left the house when it is really necessary.

His bitter conclusion with a view to the maskless mass parties that subsequently took place on the streets of Tampa: "The effects of the loose regulations can probably be measured in the next few weeks in higher contagion rates."

Is it worth it?

Of course not, partying is just not a good idea right now.

Not in Florida, not with us.

Of course we think wistfully back to the athletes' balls at the end of the carnival spurt.

By the way, not infrequently there used to be a notice on the advertising posters for all disguised grouches: “Masks are compulsory” or “Admission only with mask.” Today, they are the fools who hop senselessly around without a mask and still have not understood that we are living in a crazy phase of time that has terrible consequences for many people.

In contrast, the following message is only a minor side note.

Nevertheless, we want to inform you, dear readers, that this time we will forego our traditional choice of athletes.

For the first time in 30 years.

Organizing a gala with the elected athletes, readers and sponsors would be unthinkable at the moment anyway.

But the choice itself is difficult, because it's about the sporting year 2020, which stood still from March.

There are no champions and promoters in the amateur football leagues.

In hand, volleyball and basketball the season was canceled as well as in table tennis or ice hockey.

Anyone who was not a professional footballer or ice hacker or was lucky enough to have their season or competition ended in February 2020 remained without result.

Now that's just an estimate, but probably no more than ten percent of all county athletes had the opportunity to prove their class.

We would have to leave all others out of our imagination.

With all due respect: we don't want that.

Then, with a heavy heart, we would rather forego this campaign this year and organize an election of the athletes for 2020 and 2021 next year.

Provided, of course, that we can manage a reasonably sensible sports year in 2021 this year.

The chances are at least better than that - sorry Michael Rademacher - the Cincinnati Bengals ever win the Superbowl.
