Kira Weidle won the silver medal in the downhill in Cortina d'Ampezzo.

She only had to admit defeat to the Swiss Corinne Suter (+0.20 seconds).

Third place went to Super G winner Lara Gut-Behrami (+0.37).

For the German Ski Association (DSV) it was the second medal at the World Ski Championships after Romed Baumann's success in the Super-G.

As in Super-G on Thursday, Weidle was the only starter of the DSV in the downhill.

"Crazy, I don't quite know what to say yet, it still takes a while before I realize it," said the 24-year-old Weidle on ARD.

She had only finished third in the World Cup so far and has now won the first German medal in the supreme Alpine discipline since Maria Höfl-Riesch's bronze medal in Schladming in 2013.

Katja Seizinger last won silver in 1996 in the Sierra Nevada.

Olympic champion Sofia Goggia did not start because of an injury.

Defending champion Ilka Stuhec was 14.

Weidle already had three top ten results in the World Cup on the track with the striking Tofana shot, two years ago she just missed the podium in fourth.

In the final training session on Saturday, Weidle set the fifth fastest time, not one of the closest favorites.

On Thursday Romed Baumann won the first medal for the DSV in the Super-G.

“On the one hand, we don't have much to do with the gentlemen, but it feels good when there's a medal.

I know and everyone else knows that something like this is also possible for me, ”Weidle is quoted as saying about Baumann's success at the“ Sportschau ”.
