After a draw quartet in the afternoon, the fifth game of the Bundesliga Saturday also ended in a draw.
Union Berlin and Schalke 04 drew 0-0 in a game without major highlights, in which Schalke played well for one half, but Union was closer to the winning goal.
In the first half, the Schalke team combined nicely through midfield at times.
Nabil Bentaleb in particular, who had been pardoned and brought back to the squad during the week after several months of suspension, challenged and distributed the ball from the ten position.
Union, on the other hand, used the limited possession of the ball at least for a few chances: Taiwo Awoniyi pushed the ball from 14 meters into Ralf Fährmann's arms (14th minute), a volley from Christian Gentner from a good 20 meters just missed the right post (34th).
In between, Suat Serdar had the best chance for the guests, his long-range shot just missed the top right corner of the goal (29th).
After the break, the Schalke ball security was gone.
Union achieved even more opportunities than in the first round, but Joel Pohjanpalo (58th), Awoniyi (59th) and Marcus Ingvartsen (67th) missed the best opportunities.
For Schalke, Amine Harit flicked a free kick over Loris Karius's goal (76th) from 20 meters away.
Ingvartsen then had the best chance of the second round, Fährmann defused his header from close range (85th).
So it was a goalless draw - and the downward trend of both clubs: Union has been waiting for a win for five games, Schalke for six games.
In the table, Union is still in ninth place, Schalke is eight points behind the relegation place bottom of the table.
