Alexander Zverev is in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.

The 23-year-old won his round of 16 duel against the Serb Dusan Lajovic 6: 4, 7: 6 (7: 5), 6: 3.

Zverev is now fighting against defending champion Novak Djokovic (Serbia) or Milos Raonic (Canada) for the semi-finals in Melbourne.

For the seventh in the world rankings, it was the 50th victory in one of the four Grand Slam tournaments.

The German number one convinced against Lajovic with a powerful, but also tactically clever game.

Zverev varied in his serve hardness, also scattered stops.

In the crucial phases, last year's semi-finalist showed that he had stronger nerves.

Zverev had 44 winners after 2:21 hours.

The reward is his overall fifth quarter-finals in a Grand Slam tournament - he drew level with Nicolas Kiefer in the German best list.

Three German ex-professionals were even more often in the last eight in their careers: Boris Becker (23), Michael Stich (10) and Tommy Haas (8).

Siegemund eliminated

For Laura Siegemund, however, the tournament is over.

The last remaining German woman in the main draw failed with her Russian doubles partner Wera Swonarewa in the round of 16.

The duo, which surprisingly won the US Open in New York last September, lost to number two seeded double Elise Mertens / Aryna Sabalenka (Belgium / Belarus) 3: 6, 7: 6 (7: 5), 2: 6 .

Siegemund was eliminated in the first round in singles and mixed games alongside Kevin Krawietz (Coburg).
