Borussia Dortmund brings coach Marco Rose: Plan A worked

2021-02-15T20:40:12.304Z

Marco Rose was already a candidate in Dortmund when Lucien Favre was still leading the team. BVB will get its dream coach for the coming season. Until then, there could be uncomfortable weeks ahead.

Edin Terzić was not to be envied.

Borussia Dortmund's coach had just asked questions about the upcoming Champions League game against Sevilla FC in a media round, when he was officially downgraded less than an hour later.

Terzić is no longer considered the coach who will likely have to vacate his post after the end of the season.

Terzić is now the coach who is sure to lose his job.

Marco Rose from Borussia Mönchengladbach will follow him after the season.

Such personnel changes, even if they have been considered very likely for months, are usually communicated by both parties at the same time.

In this case, the Dortmunders were taken by surprise by the Gladbachers when they officially announced the departure of Roses.

With considerable delay, BVB also informed the stock exchange that Rose had given its approval.

The signature is still missing.

"All parties involved will now complete the contractual documentation of this coaching change in due time," it says in legally clean German.

The Dortmunders, so you can hear from the club, knew that something would come from Gladbach, just not exactly when.

The fact that it would happen before the first leg in the Champions League round of 16 and the Revier derby in the Bundesliga on Saturday at FC Schalke 04 is more of a problem from Dortmund's point of view.

The Gladbachers, on the other hand, cleared the table, which means communication sovereignty and protects against the annoying question about Rose's future.

Trainer on call?

For them, as for BVB, the question remains how it should work with a trainer on call.

There is a problem with both clubs in terms of sport.

Dortmund have to make up six points to qualify for the Champions League.

For Gladbach it would be less of a problem to miss the European elite league, but the defeat in the derby against 1. FC Köln cost Rose a lot of reputation among the fans.

An early change should not be an option, I have heard, but the football business is flexible when it comes to such questions.

"We're really looking forward to Marco Rose," said Dortmund's managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke to SPIEGEL and added that there was nothing more to say at this point.

"Out of respect for all parties involved," said BVB in a statement, he would only comment on "the sporting future under the direction of Marco Rose" after the end of the season.

That should be interesting interview maneuvers in the coming weeks, especially when the two Borussias meet on March 2nd in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup.

Plan A

Marco Rose, born 44 years ago in Leipzig, was Dortmund's dream coach when Lucien Favre, also a former Gladbacher, was leading the team around captain Marco Reus, the former Gladbacher.

It is said to have been plan A without there being a plan B.

Still trainer Terzić is at least suspected, if not known, in December that BVB and Rose are planning the future together from summer 2021.

Why the Dortmunders are so keen on Gladbach's coach, they want to continue to hide publicly.

The successes speak for themselves.

Rose led the RB Salzburg U19s to victory in the Youth League and the professionals to the Champions League for the first time.

The style from the school of Ralf Rangnick and Jürgen Klopp with aggressive pressing and direct route to goal made the coach attractive for many German Bundesliga clubs.

Gladbach was awarded the contract in 2019.

Fourth place in the Bundesliga led to the Champions League.

There Rose's team survived the group stage despite a difficult draw, in the round of 16, Manchester City are the opponents.

Rose's football has become more flexible in the German Bundesliga.

He changes the plan more often, adapts to the opponents without denying his own style.

Rose, the better maker?

Whether he will take the fans with him when they are allowed to go back into the stadium, whether he can inspire them, that is difficult to predict.

The longing at BVB is great that they get a coach again who will manage to get along with the fans, the team and their superiors over many years.

In the summer it will mainly be about keeping the team together as much as possible.

In the case of Jadon Sancho that should be very difficult, Erling Haaland threatens to leave if BVB misses the Champions League.

Rose's task will be to bring good footballers back to their limits: Giovanni Reyna, Julian Brandt, Manuel Akanji, Reus.

Some players developed positively in Gladbach: Florian Neuhaus, Jonas Hofmann, Ramy Bensebaini.

To be able to get the best out of very good opportunities, apart from the better earning potential, that should be the attraction for Marco Rose.

Perhaps also that BVB has ensnared him as Plan A, and only as that, for months.
