David Alaba has confirmed his departure from FC Bayern at the end of the season.
"I personally made the decision to do something new after this season, to leave the club," said the defense chief of the German record champions on Tuesday at a press conference.
Alaba's farewell had long been considered safe.
The defender's contract expires in the summer, and he can then move on for free.
The Austrian has not yet found a new employer.
"I have not yet made the decision where I'm going," said Alaba.
It is expected that he will move abroad.
Real Madrid have been the favorites so far.
"It's no secret that my management is in contact with the clubs," he replied when asked about a possible interest from FC Barcelona.
Alaba's successor at Bayern is Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig.
Alaba is part of Bavaria's history.
In 2008 the Austrian moved from Austria Vienna to Munich.
Since his Bundesliga debut in 2010, he worked his way up the hierarchy of the German record champions, first as a left-back and finally under Hans-Dieter Flick as a recognized head of defense.
In November 2020, FC Bayern withdrew its contract offer to Alaba.
Previously, Honorary President Uli Hoeneß had described his advisor Pini Zahavi as a "greedy piranha".
Allegedly, the salary claim should have been more than 20 million euros per year.
The money was "not a factor" for him, said Alaba, emphasizing the association's appreciation.
"Personally, I've always had a very, very good internal relationship with those responsible, and I still have them."
