Juventus Turin goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was fined 5,000 euros on Thursday for using “a blasphemous expression” during a match in Parma on December 19, the Italian Federation announced.
The 43-year-old Italian legend, record holder for the number of matches played in Serie A (653 to date), harshly harangued his teammate Manolo Portanova in the Bianconeri's 4-0 victory.
The incident, which had escaped television cameras, was captured in an audio recording.
More sanctions because of the closed doors
Blasphemy appears in the code of Italian sports justice.
Since 2010 in Italy, several sanctions have been taken against players or coaches who have made comments considered to be a lack of respect for God or the sacred.
But the penalties are more numerous this season, because of the stadiums without public which allow the microphones and the cameras to capture the comments exchanged by the players or the leaders.
In addition to the former PSG goalkeeper, AS Roma midfielder Bryan Cristante, in December, and Lazio Rome winger Manuel Lazzari, this week, had been suspended from a match for "blasphemous" remarks.
