Elitzur Netanya became last night (Saturday) the first team in the national basketball league to complete 14 regular league games, half of its planned games.

The achievement of Netanya, one of six teams in the second division in which no positives were found for Corona during the season, is not a negligible achievement.

A look at the second league table reveals real chaos.

Four teams lack one game, two teams have two games, four teams have three games, two teams have four games and one team has five games.

At present, no less than five teams have existing patients, with only one team disabled from activity - Ramat Gan, with more than half of the staff, and is scheduled to return to activity only this weekend.

Hapoel Acre is expected to return to the floor despite sick players tomorrow, and Maccabi Raanana and Hapoel Hevel Modiin are also expected to do so, if the players came out negative in the Corona tests.

The last team is Hapoel Afula.

The team from the valley will return to the floor on Tuesday for the first time since January 5, when the State of Israel went into the third closure.

Just before the national team resumed, most of Afula's players fell ill in Corona, some with symptoms, and at the moment there are still sick, but enough players recovering and healthy enough to play again.

  • New drivers - what is important to know before getting on the road?

In Leumit, they performed a number of actions, the goal of all of which is clear - to bring about a sporting end to the season on the floor.

The first action is to encourage players to get vaccinated, when according to the league's data a large majority of the league's players have already been vaccinated or have recovered from corona.

The second action is to extend the season by about two weeks, and shorten the final game from the best method from two games to only one game.

Alongside that, the teams are expected to go through a major ordeal until the expected end of the regular season, somewhere on April 20th.

The original plan with the league again from the third quarantine was to play every week on Tuesday and Saturday, but such a game plan would not help some of the teams reach the final line with 28 games.

And so some teams will move to a more stressful game schedule.

Hapoel Acre will complete 18 games in two months, including four games a week next week, Maccabi Hod Hasharon has a similar number of games left, and it has not had any Corona incidents recently, and in March it will play nine games.

Afula will play 19 games in less than two months, and eight games in 19 days.

A similar rate is expected for Ramat Gan.

"For Maccabi Tel Aviv, with the Euroleague, ten games are waiting in March," he told Walla!

Sports Today one of the chairmen of the league teams, "We know that the Premier League also plays a lot of games during this period, but we must not forget two things, the first is that the Premier League teams mostly have another foreigner outside the roster and have a deeper roster, here most teams have rotation "It's very short. There are a lot of teams that suffer from Corona and there are effects on the fitness of the players. It will be difficult, but there is no choice if you want to finish the league."

So why in the National League, as opposed to the Basketball Premier League, has there been a proliferation of Corona cases, especially in recent times? Many of the league teams point to the fact that a lot of young players play nationally, most of whom live in homes rather than separately from their families, and so the isolation in which they are supposed to stay does not really exist. At least three of the league teams have been infected in Corona as a result of being infected by one of the young players at his home.

The Corona cases in the second league have already begun in the opening rounds of the league, Maccabi Ashdod was the first team in which a team member was discovered and then a verified player. A total of three groups came to a complete halt to activity - AS Ramat Hasharon, whose halt was exactly at the beginning of the third closure, Afula and now the city of Ramat Gan. All conduct of the league teams is done under the supervision of the Ministry of Health and any inspection of the staff, cessation of activity or return is done in full coordination with the League Director and the Ministry of Health.

Last season the league teams decided not to return the season after the Corona break, mainly for economic reasons. This consideration may be crucial if more and more teams enter the Corona circle, as the league's entry into June means paying one more salary. "We do not have the luxury of paying another salary here, or even half a salary," says one of the chairmen. "There is a very clear budget here. We have to finish the league by the end of May, and so it will be."

Like last season, this season the National League will send two teams to the Premier League at the end of the season, at the end of the playoffs. The quarterfinals of the playoffs will be held in the best of five games, currently, as well as the semi-finals, while the final has been reduced to only one game. The three teams that will be in the last places at the end of the lower house games have been relegated to the national league.

The national league manager's response: "From the start of the season it was clear that we were heading for a difficult season. The corona plague taught us that nothing was unexpected and the closure that stopped the league games for a month, as well as team infestations, hit the league's regular game schedule. Despite the many difficulties we experience as a league, the situation today is much better since the start of the season. After information and dialogue efforts with the teams and players, about 85% of the league players and team members were vaccinated at least in the first vaccination or recovered and by the end of the week will be over 90% vaccinated and recovering. The last infected are players who have already received the first dose of vaccine. The director of the National League has been in constant contact with the Ministry of Health since the start of the season and operates according to an orderly protocol, with the players' health in mind.

Even today, despite many difficulties, we are working to complete the game. "And we have no doubt that this season will be decided on the floor and at the end there will be 2 immigrants. This is also the place to say that from the next round the league teams will be able to bring in an audience according to the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Sports."
