Sampaoli has a rich resume and has previously coached Chile and Argentina, as well as Sevilla, Santos and Atletico Mineiro.
"I did not hesitate when I accepted the offer," Sampaoli said after his appointment, "there is a tremendous passion in this club, the Velodrome is a huge stadium with an electrifying atmosphere. There are quiet and tense places in the world, this team suits my character."
After managing to get a ticket to the Champions League last season, Marseille got into a crisis this season from which they only recently emerged.
This crisis has pushed the team very far up to 14 points from fourth place and Sampaoli's goal will be to build a more competitive team next season.
