Cross-country skier Therese Johaug won the Nordic World Championships in Oberstdorf, despite a fall, in the skiathlon.

The German hopeful Katharina Hennig experienced a bitter 15 km in the first distance race of the title fights after wax problems and only came in 29th.

The 32-year-old Johaug won after 7.5 km in the classic and free style with a lead of 30 seconds over the Swede Frida Karlsson.

Bronze went to Ebba Andersson, also from Sweden.

After a collision with Karlsson, Johaug fell early in the race, but quickly put it away.

For the Norwegian, who became world champion three times in Seefeld two years ago, it was the eleventh World Cup gold in her career.

In her seventh World Cup participation since 2007 - in 2017 in Lahti, she was absent due to a suspension after a positive test for the steroid Clostebol - Johaug won the skiathlon for the third time and thus caught up with her compatriot Marit Björgen.

Record world champion Björgen has 18 titles, and only the Russian Jelena Wälbe (14) has won more gold medals than Johaug among the cross-country skiers.

The Austrian Theresa Stadlober surprised with fourth place (+1: 11.2 minutes) ahead of Sweden's Olympic champion Charlotte Kalle.

The Swedes should be the favorites in the season on Thursday (1:15 p.m.).

Hennig's medal dreams have grown together

The German cross-country skiers couldn't keep up with the best.

Pia Fink took 19th place as the best.

Katharina Hennig, who did not get past 29th place, had no chance.

Team boss Peter Schlickenrieder already said during the race on ARD that they had "sold out" on wax.

In the skiathlon, the athletes run half of the route in the classic technique, then switch skis and contest the second half in the skating technique.
