Manchester United's 1: 3 Summary over Newcastle (Sport 1)

Former footballer and coach Glenn Roder passed away last night (Sunday) after a long battle with a brain tumor.

He was 65 at the time of his death.

Ruder was a defensive player who wore the KPR, Newcastle and Watford uniforms and in the first two even wore the captain's armband.

He retired at the end of a 20-year playing career, coaching Gillingham and Watford.

He later joined Glenn Huddle's England squad and was later appointed West Ham manager.

In April 2003 a tumor was discovered in his brain and he took a time-out from football.

West Ham were relegated and in August he was sacked.

In February 2006, Roger was appointed coach of Newcastle, a position he held until the end of the 2006/07 season.

Later he also stood on the lines of Norwich, until January 2009.

Over the years Roder has undergone countless treatments and since 2009 has not actually worked in football on a daily basis.

He served as a consultant for a short time at Sheffield Wednesday and later at humble Stevenage.

Roger had a very special relationship with Paul Gascoigne who played with him at Newcastle in the 80s and was 12 years younger than him.

A contact so special that when Gaza moved to Lazio and Roeder had just hung up his shoes, the team from Rome offered him to join the professional team with one goal in mind: to keep the connection in the groove.

"When I first started playing for Newcastle, Glenn was the captain and he always supported me," Gascoigne said yesterday. "We would play snooker together and he would drive me home after training. I was young and he always encouraged me on the pitch. "I was near a huge football player's house. He said to me, 'Do you see that? That's what you play for.' He was my best captain, the most honest man, and he always put everyone's good before his own. .

Chris Woodell, who played with Roger in Newcastle, said: "Glenn was a wonderful guy who loved football and his family. His whole world was football and family. He was very professional, but also had a sense of humor."

Former Scotland national team midfielder Don Hutchinson, who played under Rudder at West Ham, tweeted: "I will never forget how when my father passed away, the coach told me to start the car and drive fast from London to Newcastle to see his face one last time. For five hours! "
