Zero hour at Schalke 04: What happens after the radical cut?

Among other things, a new coach has to be found again - the hottest candidates.

Gelsenkirchen - It was the absolute emergency brake: Schalke 04 * fired coach Christian Gross *, sports director Jochen Schneider, team manager Sascha Riether and athletics trainer Werner Leuthard.

The unprecedented sporting descent is now to be ended with a fresh start.

But the question is: who is doing this job?

This season alone, three coaches (not counting interim coach Huub Stevens) tried to pull the cart out of the mud - all of them crashed.

By the end of the season there will probably be an interim solution à la Mike Büskens, and a new coach will come in the summer.

We have drawn up a list of possible candidates - one of whom has already offered himself.

Steffen Baumgart (SC Paderborn)

With his authentic and direct manner, the 49-year-old would probably fit in well with the miners.

After the season he would be without a contract - his contract with SC Paderborn is running out.

So he could take over in the second or first division in the new season, depending on whether Schalke still succeeds in resurrection.

In Paderborn he shows that he can make a lot out of a little.

Peter Neururer (without association)

The veteran coach was already 69 games on the Schalke sideline - but that was more than 20 years ago.

His last coaching job at VfL Bochum was six years ago.

Neururer would be on fire: “I've said 1000 times that I help when Schalke needs me.

That's not a question for me. ”There are already signals, but“ there have to be signals from the right people. ”Even if it would be well received by some fans - an obligation is rather unlikely.

Dimitrios Grammozis (without association)

The decision was made between himself and Manuel Baum after David Wagner was dismissed.

In the end it was Baum, now the 42-year-old could get into conversation again.

According to information from the

kicker

, the name on Schalke is already being discussed.

Grammozis, however, does not have a wealth of experience, last season he coached the second division SV Darmstadt for a year.

Uwe Neuhaus (without club)

The promotion hero has not been a trainer at Arminia Bielefeld since Monday.

After four defeats in five second round games, Neuhaus had to vacate his post.

The dismissal is not met with understanding everywhere - after all, Bielefeld still has every chance of staying up.

After two years on the Alm, the 61-year-old would be free - will Schalke strike?

Domenico Tedesco (Spartak Moscow)

The 35-year-old was the last successful coach of Schalke 04. In 2017/18 he surprisingly led the team to the runner-up, only to be fired after a catastrophic start to the season.

Tedesco's contract with Spartak Moscow expires in the summer - so he could take over for the new season.

Ralf Rangnick (without club)

Despite his successful time at Schalke from 2011 to 2015, he does not enjoy a good reputation among many fans.

One of the reasons for this is his commitment to RB Leipzig *.

From a purely sporting point of view, Rangnick is most likely to be able to achieve success.

A return is still unlikely because the Swabian will simply get better offers than Schalke.
