Basketball Euroleague: end of series for Asvel, beaten in Kaunas

2021-03-03T09:46:45.852Z

The Lyonnais lost Tuesday night against Zalgiris Kaunas (85-75). The Lithuanian club ended a six-game winning streak

Asvel will therefore not equal the record of Elan Béarnais Orthez in 1987, who had won seven games in a row in the European Cup.

On Tuesday March 2, the Lyonnais fell against the Lithuanians of Zalgiris Kaunas.

Tony Parker's club had already lost the first leg on October 29, 2020 during their difficult start to the season.

With its seven victories in 2021, Asvel had not experienced such a dynamic this season.

From the first days of the championship in October 2020, numerous Covid-19 contaminations had been detected within the workforce (eleven cases including trainer Terence Jonathan “TJ” Parker).

Unable to field eight players on the third day of Euroleague against the Greek club Panathinaikos, Asvel had to suffer a defeat by forfeit (20-0).

A few days earlier, the Lyonnais had faced another controversy, the player Norris Cole, positive for the coronavirus, having been lined up on the field for a Jeep Elite match.

Remained several days at the bottom of the Euroleague standings at the start of the championship, in December, the French club then had twelve defeats in seventeen days.

A statistic that the Rhone club has hastened to rectify lately.

An unexpected rise in the ranking

From now on, Asvel is provisionally in twelfth place with 39 points after 27 days in the Euroleague (the 27th day ends this Wednesday with the matches: Vitoria - Olympiakos and Olimpia Milan - Fenerbahçe).

With a series of six victories from January 21 to last Friday, Tony Parker's club had even offered the luxury of beating Barça, leader of the championship (76-69), on February 26.

The only French club in European competition now has fifteen defeats for twelve victories.

An unexpected record, but which still seems too fair to have a chance to participate in the play-offs, seven days before the end of the regular season.

Friday, the Lyonnais will receive Fenerbahçe, eighth in the championship.
