EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW - The president of the Automobile club de l'Ouest, organizer of the event, discusses the postponement of the 2021 edition to August (21-22) with the hope of welcoming the public in number.

LE FIGARO.

- Was the decision to postpone the 24 Hours of Le Mans difficult to take?

PIERRE FILLON.

- We had already been forced to postpone the 2020 edition to September which was finally held behind closed doors.

Moving the ordeal once again is heartbreaking.

But in view of the evolution of the health situation, of the consultations that we had with the teams, the local and national authorities, we understood that organizing Le Mans in June with the public would be complicated, with a very limited tonnage.

Le Mans is a race, but above all it is a great popular celebration and we did not see ourselves depriving ourselves of the public or limiting ourselves to very low numbers.

The dates in August unfortunately do not offer any guarantee of the presence of a large audience…

No, of course, but we had to give ourselves a maximum of chances to have as many spectators as possible.

It is hoped that the effects of vaccination will help loosen the sanitary grip by the summer.
