Sunday at 9:00 am, the polling stations opened for the election of the new president of FC Barcelona, at the club's historic headquarters at Camp Nou, but also in Girona, Tarragona, Tortosa, Lleida and Andorra.
"It's time.
Election day begins.
During the next twelve hours, the socios will elect the new Barça government until 2026 ”, announced the Catalan club on its site Sunday morning.
As a handful of voters lined up in the rain, the doors opened seconds after nine o'clock.
The first major socios (supporters-shareholders) with the right to vote were able to place their ballot in the ballot box, under the watchful eye of the members of the ballot control commissions heated by auxiliary radiators.
Joan Laporta big favorite
Voters have the choice between three candidates: former president Joan Laporta (2003-2010), who is a big favorite according to the Catalan press, Toni Freixa and Victor Font.
Laporta went to deposit his ballot in the urn of table N.17 at Camp Nou at 10 a.m. sharp.
“May this day be a day of democracy for the club.
I would like to thank all my campaign team, the volunteers and employees of the club and the socios, who make possible the holding of these elections, the most important in the history of Barça.
That high participation makes us become more than a club, ”Laporta told club media, echoing Barça's slogan.
87,479 members will vote
Among the 110,290 major socios who have the right to vote according to Barça figures, 87,479 are expected Sunday in the polling stations from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. to deposit their ballot in the ballot box in person (i.e. 79.3% of the electorate ).
The remaining 22,811 socios have asked to vote by mail, a voting method open for the first time in Barça history, and have therefore already sent their ballot by post.
It is also the first time that an election for Barça does not count a single place of face-to-face voting at Camp Nou, but rather six, spread over Catalonia and Andorra.
A ballot carried out in strict compliance with sanitary conditions, with social distancing, wearing of the compulsory mask and distribution of hydroalcoholic gel.
Since the resignation on October 27 of the former president Josep Maria Bartomeu (arrested, heard by justice and then released between Monday and Tuesday in the "Barçagate" affair), the management of the club has been entrusted to a committee of transitional management supervised by Carles Tusquets, responsible for taking care of current affairs and organizing these elections.
