Coupe de France: OM, king of the bides from Carquefou to Canet

2021-03-07T23:25:25.071Z

This is not the first time in the 21st century that OM, humiliated this Sunday by Canet-en-Roussillon, is subject to the law of hierarchical adversaries.

The history of football is an eternal restart.

OM, pitifully eliminated this Sunday by Canet-en-Roussillon (2-1), resident of National 2 (the 4th national level) in the round of 16 of the Coupe de France, learned it, once again, bitterly at his expense.

In the 21st century, the Marseille club, long holder of the record for victories in this event (10), before being overtaken by PSG (13), had already suffered at least four equally resounding hiccups.

Flashback.

2008: Carquefou, it's crazy!

Unhappy finalist in 2006 against PSG (2-1), then in 2007 against Sochaux (2-2, 5 tab to 4), OM, trained by Belgian Eric Gerets, advances without too much fear towards his 8th place. final where he faces Carquefou.

On the lawn of Beaujoire, the USJA, a small amateur club in the suburbs of Nantes, then a resident of CFA2, the fifth French division, inflicts an incredible snub on the Phocaeans of Samir Nasri and Djibril Cissé.

From the 7th minute, Carquefou found the opening thanks to a goal from Papa Idrissa Ndoye.

The Marseillais then gargle a sterile domination without ever succeeding in erasing this initial handicap (0-1).

“History for Carquefou, shameful for OM”, headlines the regional daily La Provence the next day.

2012: Quevilly, it takes your breath away

OM are not approaching their quarter-final against Quevilly in the best possible way.

At the heart of a season where the group led by Didier Deschamps suffered many setbacks on the national scene, the small Norman club, then in National, bravely played its luck and led twice in the score.

Each time, the Marseillais catch up with Loïc Rémy, at the very end of the game and then in overtime.

But nothing is turning in the right direction for Gignac's teammates, punished in the 117th minute by Ayina.

For the club from the southern suburbs of Rouen, the epic stretches to the final and a defeat against Lyon (1-0).

Olympian side, we console ourselves as we can with a quarter-final of the Champions League lost against Bayern Munich (2-0, 2-0).

2015: don't talk to them about Grenoble anymore

At the beginning of January 2015, all the lights are green in Marseille.

The Bielsa magic operates.

The supporters are under the spell of El Loco and the Marseille club, autumn champions, take the leading roles in Ligue 1 to the point of imagining themselves competing with PSG in the race for the title.

In this euphoric context, the trip to Grenoble is akin to a pleasant formality.

With their game turned towards the offensive, the Olympians have, on paper at least, nothing to fear from the Isère formation which evolves in CFA.

But a wind of rebellion is sweeping the stadium in the Alps.

However, OM are in the lead, leading three times in score, but are unable to maintain this lead (3-3).

The penalty shootout turns its back on OM to smile in Grenoble (5 to 4).

For OM, it's a bit like swan song.

The beautiful momentum is running out of steam.

The second part of the championship ends with a frustrating 4th place in Ligue 1, two points off the podium.

2019: when Andrézieux teaches the lesson

The last shipwreck to date of the Olympian ship, before that of Canet, dates back to January 2019. Finalist of the Europa League less than a year ago, the turbulent Marseille club, spent in the fall of 2016 under the American flag, dark body and goods in Geoffroy-Guichard against Andrézieux, modest 6th in his group of National 2, in the 32nd final.

But what is even more serious is that OM launched this new vintage as it had concluded the previous one.

Because before falling miserably to Geoffroy-Guichard, he ended 2018 with six games without a win, including an elimination as soon as he entered the League Cup against Strasbourg.

On January 7, 2019, here are the Marseillais of Rudi Garcia, beaten regularly (2-0) and deprived of all side competitions to the championship.

The Provencal technician had made some changes, but with Mandanda, Sarr, Amavi, Gustavo, Sanson, Thauvin, Payet, Ocampos or even Germain, we were almost talking about an eleven-type!

“We have to forget our selfishness and our personal situation.

It is the club that pays our salary and we need to respect the club more ”, scolded the Brazilian Luiz Gustavo at the end of this fiasco.
