Coupe de France: to denounce gender inequalities, they play without shorts

2021-03-08T19:49:31.324Z

In the Coupe de France, the boys receive complete equipment from the FFF, the girls just a jersey. Players from a Rennes club

For International Women's Day, they wanted to shine a light on women's football.

We can say that it is successful.

The players of the Cercle Paul Bert de Bréquigny, a football club based in Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine) which plays in Regional 1, trained this Sunday with the only equipment of shoes, a jersey and pants.

Neither shorts nor socks, because the girls are deprived of them by the French Football Federation (FFF) during the Coupe de France, unlike the boys.

A news stunt revealed by the daily Ouest-France, and explained to us by Manon Eluère, CPB Bréquigny player who manages the club's social networks.

“We were looking for a fun and committed idea to mark the occasion for March 8 for women's rights,” she explains.

We are a 100% female club, committed against sexism and for gender equality.

This story of equipment for the Coupe de France, we've been talking about it for some time and we found it unfair ”.

Hence the idea of doing this training with only what the FFF gives to the women's teams during the Coupe de France: a jersey.

Where the men receive, at each turn, a complete kit including jersey, shorts and socks.

“In addition, it's a men's jersey that is not always the right size for girls,” smiles Manon Eluère.

The girls therefore organized a training session this Sunday, March 7, their pants just hidden by these too long Coupe de France jerseys, marked FFF.

“For one of our players, it was a dress!

»Laughs Manon Eluère.

This publicity stunt worked beyond expectations: "my phone keeps ringing, at work I was asked if I wanted shorts", admits Manon Eluère.

But beyond the unequal treatment of women and men, the players of Bréquigny intend to highlight women's football.

Which has been at a standstill since October in all categories, except the D 1. "If that can allow us to have a little more sponsors, spectators and media for our matches ...", hopes Manon Eluère, supported " thoroughly ”by the president of his club.

A club that does not necessarily want to cut shorts at the FFF, "which also has initiatives in favor of women's football".

Message received at the FFF

The French Football Federation (FFF), organizer of the Coupe de France, has in any case received the message from the girls of Bréquigny.

In Ouest-France, the federation specifies: “The women's teams are indeed equipped with jerseys, and only jerseys, when they qualify for the Cup at the federal level (when the women's D 2 comes into play).

We understand the demand for shorts and socks.

We are therefore well aware that improving staffing is important.

We will study this question for the 2021-2022 season ”.

The Federation also recalls that, for three years, it has found partners who support the sponsorship of the jerseys of the women's teams, and that France TV broadcasts the final of the French Women's Cup every year.
