Lazio women's coach Carolina Muracha says Italy is "racist and homophobic", while she feels women will not get along in Serie A next to men until there is a better selection process.
Murace, who made 150 appearances in Italy and scored 105 goals, was appointed to the Eagles' women's squad last month.
"Our society is homophobic and racist," Murace told Radio Anchio Sport.
"I feel our world is homophobic, there are still too many people who need to hide. It puts us in the place of many other countries. We are a people who are used to judging whether a woman is fat or not."
Muracha became the first woman to coach a men's team in Italy when she was briefly appointed coach of the Viterbasa team that then played in the third division in 1999.
However, she is skeptical about the possibility of seeing more women get along in the men’s game in Italy soon.
"Let's see a woman sitting on a bench in a team from the first league, if they pay attention to her. To be successful as a woman next to men, you need a significant story and a great background."
