The legislature of the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro voted to change the official name of the famous Maracana stadium to that of football legend Pele.
Brazilian media reported that the bill will be referred to the interim governor of Rio de Janeiro state, Claudio Castro, who has 15 days to decide whether to sign it and legislate it until the stadium name becomes Tina, the Brazilian player nicknamed "the king of the ball" and three times world champion.
It is noteworthy that the current official name of the Maracana stadium is "Giornalista Mario Filio" in honor of a Brazilian journalist and sports writer credited with the great interest in football in the country.
This stadium was the scene of historic confrontations, including the final two matches of the 1950 and 2014 World Cup, in addition to hosting the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Rio Olympics.
