The president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, was elected today (Wednesday) for another term in office and will be there until 2025. The vote took place at a virtual conference held by the International Olympic Committee and Bach won an absolute majority of 93 out of 94 votes.
"Thank you very much to all of you from the bottom of my heart for this offer that testifies to the confidence and trust placed in me," Bach said, "I want to continue to achieve the goals with you in the post-Corona age world." Bach of course serves in office while the Tokyo Olympics are postponed for a year and this is the first time the Games have been postponed in peacetime.
Bach, 67, took office in 2013 as the organization's ninth president, founded in 1894, replacing Jacques Rogge. The president of the organization can serve two terms: the first is eight years old and the second is four years old if he is re-elected. Bach is a German lawyer who won a gold medal in fencing at the 1976 Montreal Olympics and has been a member of the International Olympic Committee since 1991.
