FC Barcelona failed in the last 16 of the Champions League at Paris Saint-Germain.

After a 1: 4 home defeat in the first leg, a 1-1 (1: 1) in the second leg in Paris.

Kylian Mbappé scored for Paris (30th minute / penalty), Lionel Messi was successful for Barça (37th).

For the first time since 2007, FC Barcelona failed in the premier class before the quarter-finals.

The Catalans started the game with a lot of momentum.

The initial phase was reminiscent of the comeback in 2017, known as La Remontada, when FC Barcelona won 6-1 in the second leg against PSG and thus made up a 4-0 defeat in the first leg.

The only thing missing was the exploitation of chances: Ousmane Dembélé missed numerous opportunities.

(10th, 13th, 19th), a shot by Sergiño Dest from an acute angle steered PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas to the crossbar (23rd).

The Parisians were defensively passive, Barça had 73 percent possession after half an hour.

The French took the lead anyway.

The video assistant realized that Clement Lenglet had hit opponent Mauro Icardi in the heel in the Barcelona penalty area and brought him down.

Referee Anthony Taylor ruled on penalty.

Mbappé, who had already scored three times in the first leg, sent Marc-André ter Stegen into the wrong corner and turned left halfway up to 1-0 for Paris (30th).

FC Barcelona did not let themselves be thrown out of the rhythm by the deficit and continued to earn chance after chance.

Messi scored with a forceful shot in the top left corner to equalize (37th) and had a great chance to put his team in the lead in stoppage time in the first half: Paris' Layvin Kurzawa had fouled Antoine Griezmann in the penalty area, now Barcelona got too a penalty kick.

Messi shot hard, but not placed, half-left on goal from Navas, who had guessed the corner and saved the ball against the crossbar (45 + 3).

Less pace after the break

In the second half, Barcelona remained superior, but were far less likely to win deals.

Messi, previously cleared by Jordi Alba with a fine interface pass at the six-yard box, failed with a shot on the long leg of central defender Marquinhos (61st), Sergio Busuets headed the goal after a corner (69th).

Paris limited themselves to managing the tie, narrowing the space and taking the pace out of the game.

With success: The finalist of the previous season is in the quarter-finals without much effort.
