The handball players can dream of an Olympic medal, the soccer players cannot defend their gold. When it comes to ball sports in Tokyo, Germany is by no means represented everywhere. An overview.

The German handball players have secured participation in the Olympics and want to reach for a medal at the games (23 July to 8 August), if they actually take place.

The selection of national coach Alfred Gislason is only one of the few German teams that have qualified for Tokyo.

Only the basketball players can hope.

Here is an overview of the current state of affairs.

Baseball / Softball:

The German baseball players missed participation in the Olympic qualification tournament at the European Championships in Bonn and Solingen and are therefore absent from Tokyo.

The softball players are also not at the start.

Basketball:

As the last German team, the basketball players have the chance to qualify at the qualifying tournament in Split (June 29th to July 4th).

However, the task is tough, only the winner qualifies for Tokyo: First, it’s against Russia and Mexico.

Croatia, Tunisia or Brazil could wait in the semifinals.

National coach Henrik Rödl wants to convince the NBA stars around Dennis Schröder to participate in the tournament.

The women are out of the running.

3x3 basketball:

At the Olympic premiere of the streetball variant, the German men no longer have a chance of qualifying.

The women play in Graz (May 26th to 30th) to participate in the Olympics.

Beach volleyball:

Vice-world champions Julius Thole and Clemens Wickler have the qualifications almost in their pockets, and things are looking good for Karla Borger and Julia Sude too.

Olympic champions Laura Ludwig and Margareta Kozuch have to tremble, but like Niels Ehlers and Lars Flüggen they still have chances.

A maximum of two teams per gender and nation are allowed to compete. The Olympic Rankings cut-off date is June 15.

If the qualification via the ranking list does not succeed, there is still the possibility to win a ticket for the Continental Cup in June, Germany is represented with a women's and a men's team.

Football:

The German men qualified for Tokyo at the U21 European Championship.

The women missed the summer games by knocking out in the World Cup quarter-finals against Sweden, in 2016 they had won gold in Rio.

Handball:

After the disappointing World Cup in Egypt, the handball players of national coach Alfred Gislason secured the Olympic participation in the home tournament in Berlin.

The German women would have had to be at least seventh to participate in a qualifying tournament at the World Cup, but in the end they finished eighth and failed.

Hockey:

Both national teams confidently picked up their Tokyo tickets at the qualifying games in Mönchengladbach.

The women beat Italy (2: 0/7: 0) without any problems, the men had no problems against Austria (5: 0/5: 3).

Rugby:

Both teams failed.

The women of the German Rugby Association (DRV) were eliminated in the first round of the first European qualification tournament in Kazan, the men ended in the quarter-finals in Colomiers / France.

Volleyball:

Neither German men nor German women are in Japan.

Both teams made it to the finals of the qualifying tournaments, but then suffered clear defeats.

Water polo:

Hagen Stamm's comeback as national coach did not bring the desired success: At the disappointing qualification tournament in Rotterdam, the water polo players missed the Olympic Games for the third time after London 2012 and Rio 2016.

As eleventh in the European Championship, the women no longer have a realistic chance.
