Euro 2020: UEFA wants spectators in the stadiums

2021-03-16T15:43:39.284Z

The UEFA president has, in an interview with Sky Sports, affirmed his refusal to see the Euro playing in empty stadiums.

The major sporting events of the year are put together with meticulousness, without haste.

Attentive observers of the evolution of the health situation, they are advancing stealthily.

Like the Olympic Games in Tokyo (July 23-August 8), the Tour de France (June 26-July 18) or Roland-Garros (May 23-June 6).

The principle is that of precaution, with several scenarios under the elbow.

To adapt, as the Australian Open had to do last February.

In this context, all speeches are listened to with attention.

In view of the Euro (11 June-11 July) postponed for a year due to the coronavirus, Aleksander Ceferin, the UEFA president showed his optimism in an interview with Sky Sports: “Each host must be able to guarantee the presence of fans during matches.

The ideal pattern is to play the tournament in the twelve cities initially planned but if this is not possible, we will continue with 10 or 11 countries.

We have several scenarios but that of a Euro behind closed doors is not on the table ”.

Host cities are due to submit plans this month to allow supporters to enter stadiums during the tournament.

The deadline for cities to submit plans on the number of supporters they will allow in the enclosures remains April 7.

According to Sky Sports, the UEFA executive committee will then meet on April 19, ahead of a UEFA Congress on April 20 (“the dead line” for Ceferin), where a final decision on host cities must be made.

To validate or defeat the optimism of its Slovenian president.

The host cities of the Euro are, for the moment: Amsterdam, Baku, Bilbao, Bucharest, Budapest, Dublin, Glasgow, Copenhagen, London, Munich, Rome and Saint Petersburg.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the Sun in early March said the UK was ready to host additional matches if host cities were forced to back down.
