They had the Olympic ticket in their sights, but the plan failed.

The sailing world championship of the 470s in Portugal was disappointing for three athletes from Lake Starnberg.

Starnberg / Tutzing - The Summer Olympics in Tokyo will take place this year without a sailing team from Lake Starnberg.

Nadine Böhm and Ann-Christin Goliaß (German Touring Yacht Club) as well as Simon Diesch (Württembergischer Yacht Club) and Philipp Autenrieth (Bavarian Yacht Club) missed out on the 470 World Championship in Vilamoura (Portugal).

In the women’s category, the two women from Tutzing only came in 21st place, making them the weakest of a total of four teams from the German Sailing Association (DSV) at the World Cup.

Luise Wanser and Anastasiya Winkel from the North German Regatta Club took home the Olympic ticket, which Germany as a nation had already secured for itself.

In the men's category, Diesch / Autenrieth, as well as the Mecklenburgers Malte Winkel and Matti Cipra fought in vain under the flag of the DSV for the last free European nation place for Tokyo.

It went to the Portuguese duo Diego and Pedro Costa, who were runner-up behind Anton Dahlberg and Frederik Bergström.

Diesch and Autenrieth, on the other hand, ended up in 15th place after eleven races, two places ahead of their national rivals.

"Nerves always play a role in regattas like this," commented Ilja Wolf from afar about the crew's performance.

The manager from the BYC in Starnberg could only guess why Diesch / Autenrieth had no chance against the international competition despite excellent preparation.

"You can see that the others are doing at least as much."

Diesch / Autenrieth at the World Cup: roller coaster ride of the results

The individual placements make it clear that the German duo did not lack the potential to assert itself at the top among 29 competitors.

Diesch and Autenrieth always achieved strong results (3/6/4/2).

But they weren't enough because the team experienced a true roller coaster ride in their results (16/20/19/12/20/26).

The disqualification in the first race, with which the southern Germans immediately wasted their strings, had a fatal effect.

“It's the worst thing you can do to start with an early start,” summed up Wolf.

Böhm / Goliaß from Tutzing are initially fully on course - then comes the slump

The entry of Böhm and Goliaß was completely different.

After five races, the team from the DTYC was in fifth place and had the best possible prospects for the ticket to Tokyo.

“I was still very hopeful then,” said Christian Teichmann.

He assumed that, despite difficult preparation, everything would turn out fine for his crew in the end.

The chairman of the DTYC, who had signed the English Olympic champion Saskia Clark as trainer for his two women last summer, was initially able to feel fully confirmed.

Böhm / Goliaß went wrong once when they placed 23rd, but after two days they were fully on track as the best German team with useful results (8/2/5/10).

DTYC chairman Teichmann: "Olympia is not everything"

Teichmann cannot explain what happened next.

Although the crew already completed their second Olympic campaign after Rio 2016, they couldn't turn things around and escape the negative waters (24/19/21/23/17/17).

Teichmann broke a lance for his team: “You can't reduce these nine years to one factor.” During this time, Böhm and Goliaß had matured, especially due to the many setbacks, and were once again close to realizing their great sporting dream.

“The Olympics are not everything,” the DTYC boss clarified.

“You have achieved a lot, achieved a lot.

From my point of view, they have won more than they have lost. "
