Zoran Mamic, 49, has resigned as the coach and sports director of the Croatian record champions Dinamo Zagreb after the former Bundesliga professional was sentenced to four years and eight months in prison for fraud.
The club announced this in preparation for the second leg of the second leg of the Europa League against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday.
"Although I do not feel guilty, as I have already announced, I accept the final verdict as such and step down from the position of head coach and sports director of GNK Dinamo," Mamic is quoted in the club's statement.
The previous assistant coach Damir Krznar will replace Mamic as both coach and sports director.
The Croatian Supreme Court had previously upheld a 2018 verdict against Mamic, but reduced the prison sentence by three months.
Mamic and his brother Zdravko were fatally committed offenses in the context of transfers such as the case of superstar Luka Modric, in which a total of around 15 million euros were embezzled and 1.5 million euros in taxes evaded.
Zoran Mamic was active in Germany for several years between 1996 and 2005, during which time he played for VfL Bochum, Bayer Leverkusen, LR Ahlen and Eintracht Trier.
He also played six times for the Croatian national team.
In Zagreb he was a trainer from 2013 to 2016 and 2020 to the end.
Zdravko Mamic, the former owner of Dinamo Zagreb, was sentenced to six and a half years in prison in 2018.
Immediately after the verdict, he fled to Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Since Croatia does not have an extradition agreement with the neighboring country, Zdravko Mamic is currently evading the access of the Croatian judiciary.
