Tennis: several players angry at the new ATP ranking

In recent days, Andrey Rublev and Alexander Zverev have expressed their dissatisfaction with the new ATP ranking mode being put in place.

Introduced following the five-month circuit shutdown in 2020 due to Covid-19, the new ATP ranking system which now takes into account the last 24 months of activity of each player (i.e. two years) and no longer the last 52 weeks (which is equivalent to one year), is not unanimous.

The German Alexander Zverev (7th world) and the Russian Andrey Rublev (8th world) recently expressed their feeling of injustice.

“As long as we have the current system, the standings won't matter to me,” said Alexander Zverev this week at the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco, Mexico.

The German, who currently occupies 7th place, sees it as an injustice to see Roger Federer, who has not played for thirteen months, find himself 6th in the world.

“There's no bigger Roger fan than me, but he hasn't played for a whole year and he's above me in the standings.

“Having operated twice on his right knee, the Swiss should not appear in the top 30 without this change in the system.

"A desaster"

“I played a Grand Slam final, the Masters final, I won two tournaments.

Frankly, this ranking is a disaster.

I should be number 4 or 5 with the normal system, but at the moment the principle of the classification is a little absurd, ”Zverev said exasperatedly.

This Tuesday, Andrey Rublev also expressed his misunderstanding when journalists brought up the subject during the press conference at the Dubai tournament: “If we had the normal system, I would be something like world number 4 I think.

What do you think is best for me, to be # 8 or # 4?

"

If the provisional system is not unanimous, it will remain in place for a few months.

ATP announced at the beginning of the month the extension of this mode of operation until August 9.
