On D-100 before the start in Brest, and in the midst of the Covid-19 epidemic, the boss of the Tour de France says he is certain that the Grande Boucle will end.

On the occasion of the D-100 before the start of the Tour de France 2021, which will start from Brest on June 26, Christian Prudhomme, the director of the event, was in the Breton city on Thursday.

Surrounded by local councilors, he praised the charms of the region which was initially to host the 2022 Tour but which agreed, six months ago, to advance its tour since Copenhagen could not accommodate the big start this year.

Prudhomme was also amused to note that all the five-time winners achieved their fifth success after the Tour had started from Brittany: Anquetil in 1964, Merckx in 1974, Hinault in 1985 and Indurain in 1995. “We will see this what will Chris Froome do

(Editor's note: four-time winner)

this year, he smiled.

I don't know if he knows this anecdote.

But it can give him some hope!

In a complex and tense health context, Prudhomme wanted to be reassuring.

One hundred days before the start, there is nothing to suggest that the Tour will not take place on the initial dates.

A year ago, such serenity was not in order.

And besides, the 2020 edition, finally won by the Slovenian Pogacar, was run in September.

This time, cautious optimism reigns at ASO.

“What we can all wish is that everything will be better thanks to the vaccination and that the popular aspect will continue.

I am neither a doctor nor a decision maker.

But there is no reason to imagine that the Tour de France does not start on Saturday June 26.

One must be optimistic.

Ready to organize Paris-Roubaix even behind closed doors

Indeed, according to our information, all the current feedback from the authorities to ASO, the organizing company of the Grande Boucle, points in the same direction: unlike last year, the Tour is not threatened.

But the hypothesis that it is disputed like last year with a minimum of public at the departures and arrivals, still seems the most probable.

For ASO, the unknown, it is rather Paris-Roubaix which must be run on April 11.

“We are in contact with the authorities, as we did in Paris-Nice where the audiences have been the best for ten years.

It does say something about people wanting to get away from watching cycling, even just on TV.

“In the hollow, ASO is ready to compete in Paris-Roubaix even without an audience in Compiègne or in the Vélodrome de Roubaix.
