Pinturault, Odermatt and the others: the race for globes

2021-03-19T09:52:53.310Z

Cancellations at the start of the week gave Alexis Pinturault and Petra Vlhova the opportunity to win their first big crystal globe on Saturday in Lenzerheide (Switzerland), where the battle for the small globes of the slalom in the women and the giant in the men remains undecided.

Big globe men

Frenchman Alexis Pinturault is 31 points ahead of Swiss Marco Odermatt, neither of whom have ever won the trophy.

Alexis Pinturault is the big winner of the cancellations of the downhill on Wednesday and the super-G on Thursday, two disciplines favorable to Odermatt.

On Saturday, Pinturault can be mathematically sacred in two cases: if he wins the giant and Odermatt does not finish better than 9th, or if he finishes 2nd and Odermatt finishes at best 16th (only the first 15 score points).

For his part, Odermatt, 23, has an interest in returning to the front with as much distance as possible before Sunday's slalom, a discipline he has never competed at at the highest level.

Big globe women

Petra Vlhova, who can become the first Slovak to win the supreme title, leads Lara Gut-Behrami, crowned in 2016, by 96 points (the victory is worth 100 points).

The cancellations of the speed races have almost sacred it.

He only needs to finish in the top 15 of the slalom on Saturday, which has been the case in 25 of his last 26 World Cup slaloms.

To win the big globe, Lara Gut-Behrami, who does not compete in the slalom on Saturday, must hope that Vlhova finishes less well ranked than 15th on both Saturday and Sunday on the giant, which she must for her part absolutely win.

A highly improbable scenario.

Giant men's globe

Three-way battle between Odermatt, Pinturault and the Croatian Filip Zubcic, for an unprecedented globe winner.

Odermatt is 25 points ahead of Pinturault and 99 over Zubcic.

Zubcic must win and hope that Odermatt finishes beyond 15th place and Pinturault finishes beyond 11th place.

Pinturault must score 25 points more than Odermatt and several combinations are possible: 1st for him / at best 3rd for Odermatt;

2nd / 4th;

3rd / 8th;

4th / 11th;

5th / 13th;

6th / 16th;

7th / 16th;

8th / 16th;

9th / 16th and 10th / 16th.

All other scenarios will give the trophy to Odermatt.

Women's slalom globe

Here too, three skiers are in the running for the trophy: the defender Petra Vlhova has 22 points more than the Austrian world champion Katharina Liensberger and 37 more than the six-time American winner Mikaela Shiffrin, offering dozens of possible combinations.

For the simplest, if Vlhova is 1st or 2nd, she wins.

If she makes 3rd, she opens the door to one of her competitors who will absolutely have to win.
