SC Freiburg is approaching the European Cup places.

Coach Christian Streich's team won 2-0 (0-0) against FC Augsburg at the end of the 26th Bundesliga matchday.

Roland Sallai (51st minute) and Philipp Lienhart (79th) scored the goals.

With the win, the Freiburg team shortened the gap to sixth place, which qualifies for the Europa Conference League, to three points.

The currently sixth-placed Leverkusen had previously lost 3-0 to Hertha BSC.

Augsburg in 13th place is only six points ahead of the relegation rank to the second division.

An unusual jersey exchange took place before the game: Due to a player's red-green poor eyesight, SC Freiburg decided to play in their yellow third jerseys instead of the usual red jerseys.

Yellow then also dominated the initial phase.

Six minutes were played when Lucas Höler failed with a shot from a few meters at Augsburg goalkeeper Rafael Gikiewicz (6th), Guus Til headed the rebound over the goal.

A goal would not have counted because of a previous foul by Höler, but the chance showed the pressure from Freiburg in the early stages.

Only gradually did Augsburg keep the ball in their own ranks more often and for longer, but big chances were for a long time non-existent.

A few minutes before the break, László Bénes came to the end free-standing in the penalty area, but his flick flew past the goal (39th).

The second half began like the first: with SC Freiburg relying on ball and game control.

This time the team took advantage of their superiority.

Christian Günter drove the ball with a dribble to the penalty area, passed to Roland Sallai, and he hit the bottom left corner to lead (51.).

The Augsburgers were shaken up by the deficit, but within five minutes Marco Richter (54th) and Rani Khedira (59th) failed with good results against Freiburg goalkeeper Florian Müller.

Augsburg seemed close to equalizing in a hard-fought game, but then Freiburg scored the second goal.

After a free kick, Ermedin Demirović headed the ball to the post, Philipp Lienhart followed up and headed the ball over the line (79th).

Referee Bastian Dankert initially decided offside, but after consulting video assistant Bibiana Steinhaus, he let the goal count - the preliminary decision for Freiburg's victory.
