Euro 2021: lists of 25 or 26 players?

2021-03-31T18:22:26.410Z

UEFA is considering expanding the list of players who will be able to participate in the European Championship.

It is still a simple trend.

But according to our information, which confirms those of L'Equipe, it is starting to thicken.

UEFA would consider allowing the 24 selections qualified for the final phase of the Euro (June 11-July 11) to retain a list of 25 or 26 players for the tournament.

So far, each nation had 23 items.

Except that the Covid-19 pandemic, at the origin of the one-year postponement of the competition, continues to chip away at the fragile certainties and some fear, even, despite drastic health measures surrounding the teams, to see the virus "invite itself" during the course of the test.

Monday Roberto Mancini, the technical boss of Italy, campaigned for this development.

"Growing the teams to 25 or 26 players could be a good thing, because it has been a very trying season," he told RAI.

Plus, you never know what can happen.

What do we do if a player is positive for Covid-19?

It might be difficult to find other available players, as many will be on vacation.

"With chosen words, Mancini puts a little pressure on UEFA:" If UEFA decides, I would be in favor, "added the technician from the Alps.

Answer on April 19?

Asked on Tuesday on the proposal of the Italian coach during the press conference on the eve of the match before Bosnia-France, Hugo Lloris, the French captain, spoke “of an interesting idea.

Didier Deschamps, who is not against, also spoke on the subject.

“We can all have ideas.

Why not, he observes.

The context lends itself to it, if we have positive players.

There is only one body that can decide it.

This allows for more security.

But it's not all about the advantages.

23 to manage is not always easy.

So 25 or 28… We can also go to 8 replacements.

Some will find it good or not.

I don't expect this decision to be changed by the Euro.

"

This Wednesday, an executive committee of the body was held validating in particular the use of five replacements during the meetings.

Expansion of the lists was not on the agenda, but it was mentioned as an aside.

Nothing has been done, but a decision is likely to be made at the next executive committee scheduled for April 19.

UEFA must then specify the organization of the Euro in each of the 12 host cities across Europe, even if it means abandoning some if they cannot accommodate a public.

The European body gave until April 7, or even a little more, to each city (Rome, London, Amsterdam, Baku, Bilbao, Bucharest, Budapest, Copenhagen, Dublin, Glasgow, Munich and Saint Petersburg) to explain the 'option they have chosen for the reception of the public.

The body remains convinced that at least eleven of them will be able to receive spectators in proportions still to be defined.

Only Dublin seems, in reality, to be a problem.

Anyway, everything suggests that no match can be played in a stadium at its maximum capacity.
